MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College men's tennis team closed out their regular season with a 9-0 sweep of Washington and Jefferson College in nonconference action Tuesday (April 24).
The Presidents entered the match undefeated in their conference and 12-2 overall heading into the Presidents Athletic Conference Championships.
The Gators opened the match with a sweep of doubles. The first doubles team of
Jai Redkar and
Colton Johnson Taylor were first off the court as they swept Nate Wang and Luke Clahane 8-0. The third doubles pairing of
Cooper Miller and
Mike Siegel then dispatched Stephen Mehilbaum and Turner Wilson 8-4.
The match of the night was the second doubles match between
Mackenzie Knowlton and
Jacob Stringer against Max Perilstein and Josh St. Clair. St. Clair and Perilstein had a 7-3 advantage before the Gators rallied with four straight game wins to send it into a tiebreaker. The breaker was close as the Gators staved off a match point to knot it at six. The Gator duo persevered and won the final two matches for the sweep.
The first singles flight was the first to finish. Redkar faced Wang in the flight, and picked up the win 6-0, 6-2.
Miller clinched the match for the Gators at third singles. He took and St. Clair, winning the match 6-1, 6-1.
Johnson Taylor picked up a win at second singles, as he bested Clahane 6-1, 6-4 for the fifth Gator win. At fourth singles, Siegel defeated Perilstein 6-2, 6-4 while Stringer won his fifth singles match 6-1, 6-2 against Mahilbaum.
In the final match of the night,
Niall Kneerim defeated Wilson 6-2, 6-3 in the sixth singles flight.
The Gators are back in action Friday in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championships as they face top seed Kenyon College.
