MEADVILLE, Pa. – The visiting DePauw Tigers remained undefeated in North Coast Athletic Conference play, as they swept the Gators 12-2 and 5-2 in a Friday matinee at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
In the opener, the Tigers (14-15, 8-0 NCAC) took advantage of six Allegheny (10-11, 4-4 NCAC) errors to pull away for the six-inning win and snap Allegheny's four-game winning streak. In the nightcap, the Tigers broke a 2-2 tie with a trio of two-out runs in the top of the seventh to earn the sweep.
GAME ONE – DePauw 12, Allegheny 2
In the opener, the Gators got off to a strong start to take an early lead. After
Kala Mahen needed just six pitches to retire the Tigers in order in the opening half inning, the Gator offense looked as if it were about to meet a similar fate, as DePauw hurler Emma Baldwin made quick work of the first two batters. However,
Hayley Behr ignited a two-out rally with an opposite field single into right field, and then scored all the way from first on
Jessica Zavolta's RBI double into the left field corner.
The Allegheny lead was short-lived. DePauw opened the top of the second with a walk and a single to put runners at first and third with no outs. An RBI groundout to the right side brought in the tying run for the Tigers, before a misplayed fly ball in left field gave DePauw a 2-1 lead.
The visitors would add on with four more runs in the top of the second, all of which were unearned after a trio of Gator errors.
A pair of singles sandwiched around an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt brought home DePauw's seventh run of the game in the top of the fourth, and looked to add on more, but third baseman
Kyleigh Cason snagged a hot shot just inside the baseline and started a picture perfect 5-2-3 double play to avoid any further damage and keep the deficit at 7-1.
After DePauw manufactured its eighth run of the game with a pair of singles and three stolen bases in the top of the fifth, the Gators were able to get one back in the bottom half. With one out,
Maria DiDonato reached on a fielder's choice ground ball, and was promptly plated by an RBI single from
Kelly Lafferty to make it 8-2.
The Tigers countered by putting the game away with four runs in the top of the sixth, and the Gators were unable to avoid an early exit after going down in order in the bottom half.
Zavolta, Behr, and Lafferty managed the only three hits of the game for the Gators off of DePauw starter Emma Baldwin, who went the distance to earn the win in the circle, as she allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out five.
DePauw tallied nine hits in the win, led by Jordyn Ferra, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Teammate Liz Gets went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Mahen was saddled with the loss for the Gators.
GAME TWO – DePauw 5, Allegheny 2
The nightcap was a pitcher's duel throughout, until the Tigers scored the eventual winning runs with a two-out rally in the top of the seventh.
The Tigers looked poised to break it open early, loading the bases with no outs in the top of the first. They were able to plate a pair of runs, with a sacrifice fly and a suicide squeeze bunt, but Allegheny starter Victoria Vrandenburg was able to limit the damage, ending the frame with a pop up to left field.
After coming up empty in the bottom of the first despite a Lafferty double and a Behr single, the Gators got both runs back in the home half of the second. Cason drew a walk to open the inning, before moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from
Jessica Valerino. After DiDonato drew a two out walk, she and Cason each advanced 60 feet on a double steal, with the throw sailing into the outfield to plate Cason and move DiDonato to third. Lafferty would then follow with a single up the middle to plate DiDonato with the tying run.
Vradenburg and DePauw's Brooke Bandy would then lock into a pitcher's duel as the two teams combined for just three baserunners between the third and fifth innings. The Tigers threatened to pull ahead in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with a walk and a pair of singles, but Vradenburg got out of the jam with an inning-ending fly out to right.
After Allegheny went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers began the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt would move both into scoring position, before Kaylyn Linder stroked a single to center to plate the go-ahead run for the Tigers. Vradenburg induced a pop up for the second out of the inning, but the Tigers Lauren Godden singled into right field to plate a pair of runs and give DePauw a 5-2 lead.
Ramsey stroked a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but proved to be the final baserunner of the game, as Bonk fielded a comebacker for the second out, before getting a pop up to right to end the game.
Vradenburg went the distance and was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs on six hits with one strikeout. Lafferty paced Allegheny's offense with two of the team's six hits in the game.
The Gators will now have a four-day respite before returning to action with another home doubleheader against an NCAC foe, as they are slated to host Wooster on Wed. Apr. 18 at 3:30 p.m.
