SPRINGFIELD, Ohio— The Allegheny College softball team opened North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play with a pair of losses at Wittenberg University Saturday (March 31).
The Tigers won game one 8-6 (six innings) and game two 11-3 (five innings).
GAME ONE
The Tigers got off to a quick start, plating three runs in the bottom of the first. In the fourth, Wittenberg tacked on four more runs, before ending the game in the sixth with a run.
Kelly Lafferty went 1-of-2 with a double and a walk.
Jessica Gordon and
Kyleigh Cason also had hits for the Gators.
GAME TWO
The Tigers scored a run in the first, but the Gators made up for it in the second.
Jessica Zavolta led off the inning with a double to center field, followed by a Hayle Behr double to right field. After Cason earned a walk to load the bases, Valerino hit into an error, scoring Zavolta to tie the game.
After holding the Tigers scoreless in the bottom of the second, the Gators gained the lead in the third.
Samantha Valera reached via error to lead off the inning, and moved to second on a Gordon fielder's choice. Zavolta was then walked to load the bases. Cason was hit by a pitch, scoring Valera and putting the Gators in front 2-1. Valerino then hit into an error, scoring Gordon and extending the lead to two.
However, the Tigers scored five in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead, 6-3. In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers added five more runs to capture the game 11-3.
Lafferty, Zavolta and Behr provided the hits for the Gators. Valerino had a pair of RBI.
The Gators return to action April 3 as they host Fredonia in Meadville.
