Denison Defeats Allegheny in NCAC Action

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Allegheny was unable to overcome 19 turnovers and 17 Denison three-point field goals, falling 90-59 to the Big Red in North Coast Athletic Conference action at the Livingston Gymnasium.

Sophomore Jordan Rawls posted game-highs with 28 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Billy Urso added 11 points, but the Big Red scored 22 points off of Allegheny's 19 turnovers, while 17 of Denison's 30 field goals on the afternoon came from behind the arc.

The two teams were even in the opening stages of the game, with the Big Red holding a 10-9 lead at the 16-minute mark. Brendan O'Toole had four of the Gators' first nine points over the opening four minutes, while Urso connected on a trey, and Rawls an early layup.

Over the next three minutes, Denison would score 10 unanswered points to open up a 20-9 gap.  A Rawls three-pointer would temporarily halt the hosts' surge, but the Big Red would then heat up from outside, connecting on three-pointers on five of their next eight trips to up their lead to 36-19 with 8:43 to go in the half.

Rawls would score the Gators' next eight points, with his jumper in the lane cutting the deficit to 38-27 with just over five minutes until the break, but the Big Red would close the half on an 8-3 run to take a 46-30 lead into the locker room.

The Gators shot a strong 50 percent from the field (13-for-26) and out-rebounded Denison 16-13, but nine of the Big Red's 17 field goals came from behind the arc, while Denison scored 13 points off of 12 Gator turnovers.  Rawls finished the half with 15 points, and Urso nine.

Led again by Rawls, the Gators gradually chipped away at the deficit to begin the second half, as he scored seven points in the first six minutes of the half, and his fast break three-pointer with 13:40 left pulled the Gators to within 13, 55-42.

Denison's margin would hover between 13 and 15 points over the next four minutes, until the hosts rattled off a 13-2 run, aided by three more long balls, to open up a 74-50 lead with 8:08 remaining.   The Gators were unable to counter the Denison surge, and the Big Red would continue to pull away down the stretch.

O'Toole added seven points for the Gators, shooting 3-for-5 from the field, while also grabbing four rebounds. Brendon Urso paced Allegheny with four assists against just one turnover, while Liam Wilby grabbed two steals.

Denison (12-11, 8-8 NCAC) saw five players score in double figures, led by 18 points from Maxwell Siwik, and 14 by Matt Doyle.

The Gators (5-18, 2-14 NCAC) will return to action on Wednesday, February 14, when they close out the 2017-18 home slate with an 8 p.m. bout with NCAC foe Oberlin on Faculty Appreciation Night at the Wise Center.
