Gators Conclude Season With Loss to Oberlin

MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College volleyball team concluded its 2018 campaign with a 3-1 loss to Oberlin College in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play Wednesday (Oct. 24).

The Yeowomen won the sets 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18.

The Gators and Yeowomen battled throughout the early portions of the opening set.  Trailing 16-15, the Yeowomen rattled off a 6-0 run to gain control of the set.  After trading some points, the Gators went on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 23-22.  However, Oberlin won the final two points to take the set 25-22.

The Yeowomen took an early 9-6 lead in the second set off a 4-0 run.  The Gators answered with a 9-1 run through a pair of Oberlin timeouts, gaining a 15-10 lead.  That lead grew to 20-12 before five straight Oberlin points cut the lead to three.  The Gators maintained that lead down the stretch as Rebecca MacQuarrie ended the set with a kill, 25-21.

In the third set, the Yeowomen took an early 7-4 lead.  The Gators fought back to cut the lead to one, 10-9.  However, Oberlin answered with a 5-1 run to gain control of the momentum.  Allegheny kept up with the Yeowomen the rest of the set, but were unable to overcome that deficit as Oberlin won the set 25-21.

The momentum belonged to Oberlin early in the fourth set as they opened with an 11-3 lead.  The Gators chipped away at the lead, dropping it to 17-11, but it was not enough as the Yeowomen closed the set and the match, 25-18.

Grace Lengauer led the Gators with 15 kills.  MacQuarrie accounted for eight, while Meghan Uht, Alysha Crowther and Tamara Babic had six kills each.  Olivia D'Andrea assisted on 21 points while Raelynn Dorscheid assisted on 19.  Dorscheid also led the team with three aces.  Rachel Slotterback, MacQuarrie and Eden Merkle served up two aces apiece.

Slotterback led the backline with 23 digs.  Merkle attributed 18 digs, while MacQuarrie was in double digits with 15.

Lexi Mitchell led Oberlin with 19 kills while Emily Kelkar had 24 digs.
