CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Allegheny women's soccer team closed out its non-conference portion of the schedule with a 3-0 loss at Case Western Reserve.
The Spartans (6-4),who scored all three of their goals in the second half, put forth an impressive offensive performance throughout the match, as they ended with a 28-7 advantage in shots, and 7-3 margin in corner kicks. Allegheny (5-6) sophomore keeper
Maya Hackman made a season-high 11 saves in goal.
The teams traded chances early on, with Hackman turning in a pair of saves over the first eight minutes of play, while the Gators'
Shannon McGuinn was denied by Case keeper Lauren Metz in the ninth minute. Hackman would make two more saves between the 12th and 19th minutes, while two other Case shots were errant, before Allegheny's
Isabella Martinez was stopped on a good chance by Metz just over 21 minutes into play.Â
After Martinez's chance, the Spartans took control, rattling off 10 unanswered shots over the final 23 minutes of the first half. However, the Gator defense held strong. Hackman made three saves over the span, while the defense blocked a pair of shots and another rang off the crossbar, and the teams would enter the intermission in a scoreless tie.
The Spartans took three shots in the first five minutes of the second half, but the Gators would then go on the attack, leading to a prime scoring chance in the 51st minute. McGuinn's blast was blocked out of bounds, before
Taylor Renk's header off of the subsequent corner kick went just high. Two minutes later, another McGuinn blast was saved by Metz and knocked out of bounds, but nothing would come from the ensuing corner.
The hosts then upped their offensive pressure and seized back the momentum. In the 57th minute, Hackman made a big save on a header off of a Case corner, before she again came up with a stop two minutes later. However, the Spartans would finally find the scoreboard in the 61st minute on a goal from Maggie Tyma, who controlled a bouncing header in the box and blasted it in the lower right hand corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Case continued to press, and Hackman made two more stops 90 seconds apart, but the Spartans' Kimberly Chen corralled the rebound off of Hackman's second save, and put it home to make it 2-0 with 24:03 left to play.Â
The Gators would slow the Case attack over the next several minutes, but were unable to produce any sustained offense. Case would then put the game away with 9:13 left, when Chen connected for her second goal of the game, this one on a free kick from 25 yards out, to make it 3-0.
Allegheny looked to cut into the lead over the final nine minutes of play, but the Spartans kept them at bay. McGuinn's shot in the 82nd minute was saved, before
Amy Barra's attempt with 2:31 remaining was blocked.
McGuinn topped Allegheny with four shots on the evening, including three on goal. Metz played all 90 minutes in net for Case to earn the shutout win.
The Gators will now close out the regular season with seven straight games against North Coast Athletic Conference foes. The stretch kicks off with a 3:00 p.m. match against visiting Ohio Wesleyan on Fri. Oct. 5 at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.Â
