Gators Sweep Pair of Matches

MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College volleyball completed a 3-0 weekend with 3-0 victories over Buffalo State and Pitt-Greensburg Saturday (Sept. 30) in Meadville.
 
In their opening match, the Gators swept Buffalo State 25-18, 25-20, 25-18.
 
The teams exchanged the opening 18 points, finding themselves tied at nine in the opening set.  The Gators then got on a roll, going on an 8-0 run, fueled by the serves of Justine Kelly.  The Bengals fought back to bring the game within five at 20-15 before the Gators closed out the set on a block by Leah Franzluebbers and Justine Kelly.
 
The second set played out similar to the first.  Tied at seven, the Gators went on a 6-0 run to take control.  Late in the set, the Bengals went on a run to bring the score to 22-20 in favor of the Gators, but Allegheny won the ensuing three points, capped off by an ace from Terra Schall.
 
The closing set was back-and-forth as neither team found a distinct advantage until the Gators utilized a 4-0 run to take a 20-15 lead.  The Bengals answered with a 3-0 run to bring the game to 20-18.  However, the Gators regained their footing as they ended the match on a 5-0 run.
 
Franzluebbers led the Gators with 10 kills.  Alysha Crowther finished with nine while Hannah Cubarney had five.  Kylee Karczewski had a great game serving, leading the Gators with four aces.  Rachel Slotterback and Justine Kelly had three apiece.  Kelly also had 28 assists.
 
Defensively, Schall led the Gators with 14 digs.  Kelly finished with 11 while Slotterback had nine.
 
In game two, the Gators topped Pitt-Greensburg 25-19, 25-14, 25-17.
 
The Gators controlled the momentum in the opening set.  Leading 16-13, Allegheny went on a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach for the Bobcats.  Up 24-19, the Gators closed the set on a Bobcat ball handling error.
 
A run midway through the set once again proved the be the determining factor in set two.  Leading 12-10, the Gators rattled off a 6-0 run on the serves of Rebecca MacQuarrie.  The Bobcats brought the score to 22-14 before the Gators closed the set on a 3-0 run, capped off by a MacQuarrie kill.
 
The Gators owned a 12-7 lead in the third set before a 5-0 run from the Bobcats tied it up.  A 4-0 Allegheny run pushed the momentum in their favor.  After trading points, the Gators put together a 5-0 run to put the set out of reach.  The Gators closed the match on an attack error by the Bobcats.
 
Crowther led the Gators with 13 kills while Franzluebbers had eight.  Karissa Welker and Grace Lengauer had four apiece while Kelly, Curbarney and Tamara Babic each had three.  MacQuarrie led the Gators with three aces while Franzluebbers and Kelly had two apiece.  Kelly had 20 assists while Raelynn Dorscheid had 11.
 
Defensively, Schall led the Gators once again with 13 digs.  Franzluebbers and Welker had seven apiece. 
 
The Gators are back at home Thursday (Oct. 5) against John Carroll University.
