MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College men's soccer was unable to overcome an early Geneva College goal as they fell 1-0 in their 2017 nonconference finale Tuesday (Sept. 26).
The Golden Tornadoes struck first in the eighth minute as Gib McCraken scored on a free kick from thirty yards out.
In the 17
th minute,
Izaak Miller put a shot on goal but was saved by Luke Nolan. Minutes later,
Adam Mascio headed a corner kick from
Danny Reid towards the net but it went wide.
In the closing minutes of the half, the Gators earned a corner kick but were unable to convert as they entered the half down 1-0.
The Gators outshot the Golden Tornadoes 7-6 in the opening half.
In the opening 15 minutes of the second half, the Gator offense was aggressive, peppering the Geneva defense with shots but were unable to find the back of the net.
Throughout the second half, the Gators kept the ball in Geneva territory, limiting the Geneva chances.
In the closing seconds,
Liam McKersie worked a ball from midfield to
Bryce Evans. Evans got behind the defense and shot with seven seconds left but Nolan turned it away, sealing the Geneva win.
"We played a strong second half, trying to keep our guys fresh with multiple subs," said Gator head Coach
Angelo Panzetta. "It was effective, leading to more possessions. I am proud of us for fighting to the end, and Evans almost equalized with seven seconds remaining."
Reid and Hassan had three shots apiece while
Nick Ferreira made four saves in net.
The Golden Tornadoes owned a 15-14 advantage in shots but the Gators earned twice as many corner kicks, 6-3.
The Gators are back in Sunday (Oct. 1) in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action at Wabash College.
