ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Allegheny women's soccer team was defeated 6-0 by #24 Nazareth College in the finale of the Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament.
The Allegheny (0-2) defense was tested often by the powerful Nazareth (2-0) squad, as the Golden Flyers owned a 27-8 advantage in shots on the afternoon.
Nazareth's offense kept pressure on the Gators early, but the Allegheny defense withstood the early charge, as keeper
Maya Hackman made six saves over the first 24 minutes of play to keep the match scoreless. Â The Gators also had a pair of chances over the span, but Nazareth's Hannah Miller stopped shots by
Shannon McGuinn and
Taylor Renk to keep Allegheny off the board.
The Golden Flyers then struck quickly, tallying a pair of goals off of set pieces within a two-minute span.  Directly following an Allegheny yellow card in the 35th minute, Miranda Timberlake knocked in a free kick from the doorstep for Nazareth's first goal of the afternoon.  Ninety seconds later, the Golden Flyers cashed in on a corner kick that again deflected off of Timberlake in front and into the cage to make it 2-0.  In the 41st minute, Nazareth made it 3-0 when Mary LoCicero knocked in a ball through traffic.  The hosts continued to attack following the third score, but Hackman made three more saves over the final three minutes of the half to keep the deficit at three.
The Gators looked recharged coming out of the break, and received a pair of strong scoring chances in the opening 10 minutes of the second frame.  in the 55th minute,
Isabella Martinez's corner kick connected with
Blair Proteau in front, but the rookie's attempt went wide. Â The Gators were able to keep the ball following Proteau's attempt, with
Sarah Donohue connecting on a strike that was saved by Miller. Â Just two minutes after Donohue's attempt, Martinez blasted a shot inside the box that beat Miller, but went wide of the net.
Nazareth regrouped after the quick Allegheny flurry, holding the Gators to just two more shots over the final 30 minutes of play, while adding on three goals to put away the victory.
Hackman was strong against the relentless Nazareth offense, finishing with 11 saves in her second career start.  Proteau led Allegheny with three shots on the day, while McGuinn was credited with a pair. Â
The Gators will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 5 for their home opener, as they face Geneva College beginning at 4:30 p.m. at The Robertson Athletic Complex.Â
