Hughes Takes First, Gators Second at Home Invite

MEADVILLE, Pa. - For the second consecutive meet, senior John Hughes placed first, while the Gators tied for second, at the Allegheny College Classic at the Robertson Athletic Complex.

Hughes out-sprinted IUP's Greg Beaudette over the final 80 meters to win the four-mile race by less than a half second, helping the Gators to a tie for second place in a strong field on a steamy morning. Hughes' final time was 20:02.60, while Beaudette was clocked in 20:02.90.  It marked Hughes' second win of the season, after placing first at the Chatham Cougar Challenge exactly two weeks earlier.

Allegheny tied with IUP in the team standings with a final score of 71, as Hughes was one of three Gator runners to finish in the top 10.  Fellow senior Carter Smith placed fifth in 20:22.35, while junior Matt Svetz turned in his highest career finish, placing ninth in 20:29.62.

Carnegie Mellon turned in a strong effort to win the team title, with just 11 seconds separating their first through fifth runners, to finish with a meet-low 46 points.  The Tartans' top five runners placed sixth, seventh, 10th, 11th, and 12th.

Following Svetz's ninth-place effort, freshman Adam Cook finished in 27th place at 21:20.33, while Benjamin Slack-Foust rounded out the Gators' scoring five with a 49th-place time of 21:55.42, one spot and less than one second ahead of Ben Evans (21:55.60).  Gabriel Herbst closed out Allegheny's top seven, timed in 22:09.25.

A total of 11 teams and 133 runners took part in the event, the first cross country meet hosted at the Robertson Athletic Complex since the 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship.

In the team standings, following CMU, Allegheny, and IUP, Case Western Reserve finished fourth (78 points), Washington & Jefferson fifth (142), Grove City sixth (155), Seton Hill seventh (220), Waynesburg eighth (234), Chatham ninth (256), Captial 10h (287), and Thiel 11th (337).

The Gators will return to action on Sept. 29, traveling to eastern Pennsylvania to take part in the Paul Short Run at Lehigh Unviersity.
