GROVE CITY, Pa. - Freshman
Shannon McGuinn's goal with one minute left in overtime propelled Allegheny to a 1-0 win at Grove City College.
After collecting a loose ball in front off of a corner kick, McGuinn found the net in the 99th minute on the Gators' lone shot of the extra session.  It marked McGuinn's team-leading third goal of the season, and first career game-winner.Â
The Wolverines held a possession advantage throughout the match, ending with a 14-8 advantage in shots, and a 13-4 margin in corner kicks, but the Gator defense proved up to the task, led by rookie keeper
Maya Hackman, who earned her first career shutout victory after making nine saves, including five in the first half and two in the overtime period.Â
The Wolverines put forth a relentless offensive charge throughout the first half, out-shooting the Gators 11-3 while taking 11 corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes. Â The hosts put on the pressure early, tallying three shots and two corner kicks in the first four minutes of play.
After Hackman made a pair of saves in the 13th minute, the Gators received their first big scoring chance. Â Granted a free kick after a Grove City foul,
Blair Proteau's direct kick from 30 yards out beat Wolverine keeper Trishae Winters, but rung off the crossbar. Â Allegheny maintained possession, but a shot from
Kelli Gaus immediately after went wide.Â
Â
As the half wound down, the Wolverine offense continued its attack, with five shots and five corners over the last eight minutes. Allegheny's defense weathered the storm, led by Hackman, who made three of her eight first half saves over the span to keep it scoreless at the intermission.
The offensive chances subsided for both teams in the second half, as it took until the 61st minute for the Gators'
Taylor Renk to tally the first shot of the half. Â Grove City looked primed to score the go-ahead goal in the 67th minute, as a corner kick was deflected toward the open goal, but blocked out of bounds by the Gator defense. Â After the ensuing corner kick, the Wolverines were whistled off side, leading to a Gator possession that ended with a good shot from McGuinn that was saved by Winters.
With regulation drawing to a close, the Wolverines looked to put together a final attack, but Hackman turned in a pair of saves in the 84th minute to keep the game scoreless at the end of the second half. Â
Play was much more even in the second 45 minutes, as each team was credited with four shots and two corner kicks.
Grove City looked to re-gain control at the start of the overtime period, maintaining possession and putting two more shots on goal, both of which were turned aside by Hackman. Â With 1:19 left in the period, Allegheny was granted a corner kick that was sent into the box by
Sarah Donohue. Â After a deflection, McGuinn collected it and sent it into the goal to give the Gators the win.
Five different players accounted for the Gators' eight shots, with Donohue and McGuinn sharing the team lead with two apiece. Â Grove City's Lindsay Hutton had a game-high three shots, while the Wolverines' Winters finished with one save.Â
It was Allegheny's second straight overtime contest, after the Gators were edged 2-1 by Case Western Reserve three days earlier. Â With the win at Grove City, the Gators are now 4-1-1 in overtime games dating back to last season.
The Gators will return to the road for the next match, traveling to central Pennsylvania to face Juniata College on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
