Late Goal Lifts Gators Over Ladies

GAMBIER, Ohio— The Allegheny College women's lacrosse team won a back-and-forth North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) battle at Kenyon College, defeating the Ladies 10-9 Saturday (April 22).

After a scoreless four minutes to start, the Ladies cracked the scoreboard first on an Allie McLane goal.  It did not take long for the Gators to make up the goal as Shelby Piper found the back of the net two minutes later to tie the game at one.  After Jessie Thiessen hit the post on a free position shot, Lexi Einsig picked up the groundball and buried it in the back of the net to give the Gators a 2-1 lead.

The Ladies answered on an Avery Morgan goal to tie the game at two.  Four minutes later, Maddie Olson put the Gators back in front with a goal off of a feed from Piper.  A few minutes later, Olson hit paydirt for the second time, extending the lead to 4-2.  However, McLane and Mary Grace Detmer scored in the closing minutes of the half to tie the game at four heading into the final thirty minutes.

Lucy Somers scored for the Ladies early in the second half to give them a 5-4 lead.  Piper answered for the Gators shortly after, scoring off an assist from Thiessen.  The Ladies answered with a pair of goals, coming from Cassie Hudson-Heck and McClane.  The Gators responded with their own pair of goals, coming from Alex Zielinksi and Piper, tying the game at seven.

The back-and-forth play continued as McClane gave the Ladies an 8-7 lead.  Six minutes after the goal, Olson tied the game on a pass from Piper.  The Ladies regained the lead 90 seconds later as McClane found the back of the net once again.  Piper responded for the Gators to tie the game at nine with eight minutes remaining.

Nearly seven minutes passed before either team scored again.  With just over a minute to play, Olson scored her fourth goal of the game to put the Gators in front 10-9.  As time expired, the Ladies had a chance to tie it on a free position but the shot went wide as the Gators picked up the conference win.

Piper led the Gators with six points on four goals and two assists.  Olson also had four goals.  Einsig and Zielinski had goals while Thiessen had an assist.

Defensively, Brie Freeman and Laurence Busque caused three turnovers and collected two groundballs apiece. Thiessen had a team-high four groundballs while causing two turnovers.  Alex Maloney also caused two turnovers.

Kaelin Clogan picked up the win in net for the Gators.  She made seven stops while grabbing two groundballs.

The Gators are back at home Wednesday (April 26) for a NCAC contest against the College of Wooster at 6:30 p.m.
