John Carroll Takes Two From Gators

MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College softball team dropped a nonconference doubleheader to John Carroll University at home Wednesday (April 12).

The Blue Streaks won game one 6-2.  The Gators rallied late in game two but ultimately fell 7-4.

GAME ONE
The Blue Streaks found the scoreboard first, putting four runs across the plate in the second.

In the bottom of the second, Taylor Massart earned a walk to lead off.  Abrianna Sadler laid down a sac bunt to move Massart to second, and got on base safely via error.  Megan Hazlett moved the runners up on a sac bunt but the Blue Streaks were able to get out of the inning unscathed.

With one out in the third, Paige Blinkiewicz hit a double down the right field line.  With two outs, Jessica Zavolta singled on a slow roller towards the left side of the infield.  Massart followed up with a single up the middle, scoring Blinkiewicz.  With runners on first and second, Sadler hit into another error, which brought Massart home from second, cutting the gap to 4-2.
After a couple scoreless innings, the Blue Streaks struck once again in the sixth, adding a pair of runs.

Shannon Putnam singled with two outs in the sixth but the Gators were unable to bring her across the plate.
In the seventh, the Gators were unable to make up the run differential as they fell in game one.

Five different Gators tallied hits in the game.  Massart collected a RBI while Blinkiewicz and Zavolta had runs.

Mahen went the full seven innings allowing six runs (five earned) while striking out three.

GAME TWO
The Blue Streaks threatened in the first with a leadoff hit but Miranda Arison fanned two to get the Gators out of the inning with no damage done.

Maria DiDonato singled through the left side with one out in the bottom of the first but was unable to find home.

After the Gators earned two walks in the second, Rachel Ramsey loaded the bases with a two-out single.  However, the Blue Streaks got out of the jam to keep it scoreless.

DiDonato led off the third by reaching first on a fielding error.  Zavolta moved her to second on a sac bunt.  With two outs, Sadler singled past the first baseman, bringing DiDonato home from second and giving the Gators a 1-0 lead.

John Carroll took the lead in the fourth, plating a pair of run. The Blue Streaks took advantage of walks in the fifth as they extended their lead to 7-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Zavolta hit a one-out double to the left center fence.  Massart hit safely to left field to put runners on the corners but the Blue Streaks got out of the inning.
Ramsey collected her second hit of the day with a two-out double in the sixth but was stranded on the base.

DiDonato led off the seventh with a single over the shortstop's head.  Zavolta's second hit of the day put runners at first and second. With two outs, Zavolta scored on an error to take the lead down to 7-2. Hazlett followed with a double off the left center wall, bringing two more home. However, the Blue Streaks recorded the final out to preserve the win.

DiDonatio, Zavolta, Ramsey and Hazlett had two hits apiece.  Zavolta, Ramsey and Hazlett each had a hit drop for a double.  Hazlett knocked in a pair of runs while Sadler brought one home.

Arison ended the game with five strikeouts.

The Gators are back in action Thursday (April 12) for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader against Hiram College.
