Gators Fall to Denison in NCAC Opener

GREENVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College women's lacrosse team fell in their North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opening contest against Denison University 15-6 in a game held at Thiel College in Greenville.
 
The Big Red got off to a hot start, scoring the game's opening three points.  Lexi Einsig got the Gators on the board with a goal at 21:20.  Denison answered Einsig with three to increase their advantage to six. 
 
With 13:37 to play in the half, Shelby Piper scored her first goal off an assist by Katie Weiss.  After a pair of Big Red goals, the Gators scored back-to-back goals.  Einsig scored the first goal, her second of the game, followed by Piper's second goal with 2:06 to play.  Late in the half, Denison added a goal to take a 9-4 lead into the half.
 
The first two goals of the second half were scored by Denison.  Eight minutes in, Alex Zielinski scored to cut the lead to 11-5.  However, the Big Red put two more in the net before Alexa Maloney found the back of the net.  Maloney's goal was the final one for the Gators as Denison added four more to seal the win.
 
Piper and Einsig led the Gator offense with two goals apiece.  Maloney and Zielinski also tallied goals while Weiss registered a point on an assist.  Each team shot the ball 27 times.
 
Zielinski had a team-high four groundballs.  Jessie Thiessen and Kaelin Clogan had three apiece.  Thiessen caused a team-high three turnovers while Laurence Busque had two.

Clogan started in net for the Gators, making nine saves.
 
The Gators are back in action March 8 at Washington & Jefferson College.
