MEADVILLE, Pa.— The Allegheny College women's lacrosse team rallied late to tie their game against John Carroll University Wednesday (March 29) but ultimately fell 15-14 in overtime.
The Blue Streaks got off to a fast start, scoring the first two goals, but the Gators were quick to answer.
Maddie Olson scored the first goal for the Gators off a free-position shot. Shortly after, she scored her second on an assist from
Shelby Piper. Olson continued to play well, scoring her third goal to give the Gators a 3-2 lead.
John Carroll responded by scoring three straight goals to regain the lead, 5-3. An unassisted Piper goal brought the lead within one but the Blue Streaks once again scored three straight to increase their lead to 8-4. Olson scored her fourth goal of the game three minutes later but John Carroll scored one more late in the half to take a 9-5 lead.
Jessie Thiessen started the second half with a quick unassisted goal to bring the lead down to three.
Alex Zielinski followed up with a goal, bringing the lead to 9-7. The Blue Streaks got one back but the Gators answered when Olson found Piper to bring the Gators back within two.
A goal by the Blue Streaks took the lead back up to three, 11-8. The Gators responded with a pair of goals to pull within one once again.
Alexa Maloney scored the first of the two goals, followed another by Olson. Piper assisted on both. After a Blue Streak goal, Piper found the back of the net to bring the game within one. A minute later, Zielinksi scored on a Maloney assist to tie the game at 12.
After three scoreless minutes, Olson netted her sixth goal of the game on a free position goal to give the Gators their first lead since early in the first however. The Blue Streaks tied the game up minutes later.
In the final minute, Piper scored off an assist from
Taylor Vigneri to give the Gators a one goal lead with 45 seconds to play. However, the Blue Streaks matched the Gators goal to send the game into overtime.
The Gators had the first shot in overtime but Blue Streak goalie Elyssa Zablo made the save to keep the game going. On the other end, Meghan Harte ended the game with a free position shot.
Olson finished the game with seven points on six goals and one assist. Piper found the back of the net four times while assisting on three more. Zielinski had a pair of goals while Maloney and Thiessen has one each. Maloney also added an assist, as well as Vigneri.
Thiessen added 10 draw controls and five groundballs to her offensive performance. Olson tallied four groundballs while Vigneri and
Kaelin Clogan had three apiece. The Gators owned a 24-20 advantage on groundballs.
The Gators travel to Buffalo State University for a nonconference contest Friday (March 31).
