Gators Suffer Setback in Twinbill

CLERMONT, Fla.— The Allegheny College softball team continued play at the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. Sunday (March 19) with a pair of games.

The Gators dropped game one to Union College 3-1 and game two to Babson College 5-1.

GAME ONE
Paige Blinkiewicz reached first on an error to lead off the game.  After reaching second on a wild pitch, Jessica Gordon moved her to third on a sac bunt.  Jessica Valerino brought Blinkiewicz home on a fielder's choice to give the Gators the lead.

Union answered in the top of the second, plating one to tie the game at one.  In the third, they added an additional run and threatened for more but pitcher Kala Mayhen got the Gators out of the bases loaded jam.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Blinkiewicz led off with a single down the middle.  She moved to third on failed pick off and a Gordon sac bunt but the offense was unable to move her past third, leaving her on base.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Jessia Zavolta hit a double to center field, putting herself in scoring position.  However, the Dutchwomen held the Gators at bay the rest of the inning, securing the 3-1 victory.

Blinkiewicz led the Gators with a hit and a run.  Valerino tallied a RBI while Zavolta and Sadler had a hit apiece.

Mayhen got the start on the mound.  She allowed six hits and two earned runs over seven innings while fanning four.

GAME TWO
The Beavers got out to a quick start, putting up one run in the bottom of the first.

Taylor Massart earned a walk to lead off the second.  After moving to second on a Zavolta sac bunt, she advanced to third on an Abrianna Sadler groundout.  With two outs, Megan Hazlett singled through the right side to bring Massart home and tie the game at one.

After the Gators kept the Beavers off the board in the second, the Beavers plated a second run in the third.

Valerino led off the fourth with a single through the left side.  Arissa Spitalny came in to pinch run, and reached second on a Massart groundout but the Gators were unable to move her the rest of the way around as the Beavers escaped the inning.

The Beavers offense got back to work in the fifth, extending their lead to 5-1.

The Gators offense looked to make up the gap in the seventh.  Massart led off with a single to the shortstop.  After Maria DiDonato came in to pinch run, Zavolta singled to left field.  However, the Babson defense recorded outs on the next three batters to seal the win.

Massart had a hit and a run for the Gators while Hazlett had a hit and a RBI.  Valerino and Zavolta also had hits.

Miranda Arison got the start on the mound.  She went six innings, striking out seven while allowing six hits.

The Gators are back in action Monday (March 20), taking on Hope College and Thomas College.
