WOOSTER, Ohio – Conference co-leader Wooster rode a hot start to a 95-49 win over the Gators in a North Coast Athletic Conference battle at the Timken Gymnasium.
The Fighting Scots (16-6, 13-2 NCAC) scored the game's first 10 points and never looked back, stretching their winning streak to 10 games and dropping the Gators to 7-15 overall, and 4-11 in NCAC play.
Allegheny struggled offensively on the night, as the Gators shot just 29 percent from the field (18-for-62) and 18 percent (5-for-27) from behind the arc, while shooting an uncharacteristic 40 percent (8-for-20) from the foul line.
Wooster scored on its first six possessions of the game, and rode an early disparity in both three-point and field goal shooting to jump out to leads of 10-0, 17-6, and 35-12 in the first 10 minutes of play. Over that span, the Fighting Scots connected on four of six attempts from behind the arc, and 11 of 14 tries from the charity stripe. Conversely, Allegheny went to the line just three times, and connected on two trifectas in eight attempts, one by freshman
Jamison Nee, and the other by sophomore
Billy Urso.
While the Gators recovered from the slow start to score 16 points over the final eight minutes of the half, Wooster built upon its torrid start to eventually build a 65-28 lead at the intermission. The hosts shot a staggering 63 percent from the field (19-for-30) and 67 percent (10-for-15) from behind the arc over the first 20 minutes, while also cashing in on 17 of 21 attempts from the foul line. Conversely, Allegheny shot 35 percent from the field (11-for-31), while going just 4-for-13 from behind the arc, and 2-for-9 from the foul line. Wooster also grabbed 28 rebounds to the Gators' 10 in the first half.
Allegheny was able to slow the Wooster offense in the second half, holding the Fighting Scots to just 27 percent (10-for-36), but the Gators were unable to gain any ground, tallying only seven second half field goals, and going 1-for-14 from deep.
Nee was the lone Gator to score in double figures, tallying 12 points, going 4-for-5 from the field and 2-for-3 from deep.
Evan Zabriski and
Jordan Rawls bucketed eight points apiece, while rookie
Isaac Manton pulled down a team-leading five rebounds.
Dan Fannelly led the Fighting Scots with 22 points, boosted by a 9-for-11 showing from the foul line, while Danyon Hempy came off the bench to score 18. Alex Baptise and Eric Bulic each grabbed eight rebounds for Wooster, which finished with a 56-36 advantage on the glass.
The Gators will look to bounce back on Sat. Feb. 11, playing host to Denison at the Wise Center for a 3 p.m. tip.
