MEADVILLE, Pa. – Visiting Ohio Wesleyan clinched the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title, while also dashing Allegheny's post-season hopes, with a 110-55 win over the Gators on Senior Day at the David V. Wise Center.
The loss ends Allegheny's season at 7-18 overall, and 4-14 in the NCAC. Ohio Wesleyan moved to 19-6/16-2 NCAC, and now earns the number one seed in the upcoming NCAC Championship Tournament.
The Battling Bishops shot 55 percent from the field and connected on 19 three-point field goals, while committing just five turnovers for the game. Conversely, Allegheny struggled on the offensive end, as they shot just 32 percent from the floor and 4-for-26 from behind the arc.
Sophomore
Billy Urso was the lone Gator to score in double figures, posting 11 points, while freshman
Jamison Nee scored nine points, and, in his last game as a Gator, senior
Evan Zabriski tallied eight.
Ohio Wesleyan led from the start, but thanks to Nee, the Gator deficit never grew to greater than five in the first seven minutes of the opening half. The rookie point guard scored nine of Allegheny's first 11 points over the span, before Zabriski's first bucket of the game pulled the Gators to within three, 14-11, with just over 13 minutes left in the half.
Following the Zabriski lay up, the Battling Bishops would erupt, scoring on 11 consecutive possessions to rattle off a 25-5 run and open up a 39-16 advantage with 7:16 remaining until the break.
The Gators temporarily halted the surge, as
Jordan Rawls scored four points in a one-minute span, before Urso connected on a three from the left wing to cut the gap to 44-25 with 5:37 to go. However, OWU regained control heading into the break, ending the half on a 12-5 run to take a 61-33 lead at the break.
The Battling Bishops shot 66 percent from the field (23-for-35) and an even 50 percent (9-for-18) from behind the arc over the first half. Nee's nine points led Allegheny over the first 20 minutes of play, while Ohio Wesleyan's Will Orr entered the break with 18 points, on the strength of six three-pointers.
Ohio Wesleyan's lead continued to grow over the second half, as they stayed hot from long range, connecting on 10 more treys in the final 20 minutes. The Gators were unable to find their footing on offense, as they managed just nine second half field goals, and one from international waters.
Four players scored in double figures for Ohio Wesleyan, while seven different Bishops scored at least eight points. Orr led both sides with 21 points, all coming from behind the arc, while Seth Clark chipped in with 20, and Nate Axelrod 16 to go with a game-high six assists.
The Gators did finish with a 46-41 rebounding advantage, led by eight boards from Rawls and six from Nee.
Prior to the game, Allegheny celebrated the careers of three seniors who were making their last Wise Center appearance, with
Conor Macomber and student assistant coach Patrick Martinelli joining Zabriski, who will graduate as the 12th leading scorer in program history with 1,233 career points, while his 129 three-point field goals are tied for ninth all-time in the Gator record books. Macomber appeared in 75 games, with 67 starts, during his three-year career at Allegheny, totaling 477 points and 77 three-pointers. Martinelli assisted the Gator coaching staff for four years.
