Late Comeback Lifts Gators Past Mount Union

MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College women's basketball team overcame a fourth quarter deficit as they defeated the University of Mount Union, 76-70, Tuesday (Nov. 21).

The Gators gained a 6-4 lead early on in the opening quarter.  That lead continued to grow as a three from Zoe Soilis made it 16-9 with just over a minute to play in the first.  The Raiders ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 16-15 heading into the second quarter.

The Raiders struck first in the second to take the lead, 17-16, on a pair of free-throws.  The Gators tied the game back up at 20 on a three from Delaney Arbore.  The teams traded backsets over the next five minutes as Mount Union regained the lead late in the half, 34-31.  A free throw by Madison Caufield cut the lead to two but the Raiders hit a late three to take a 37-32 lead into the half.

Arbore led the Gators with eight points, two rebounds and two assists in the opening half.  Soilis scored seven points while leading the Gators with six rebounds.  The Gators shot 34.4% (11-of-32) for the half.

Both teams came out of the locker room shooting well, as the Gators brought the game within one at 46-45.  The Gators kept it close throughout the quarter as they outscored the Raiders 26-21. Allegheny tied the game at 58 on a pair of Candaisy Crawford free throws heading into the fourth quarter.

Mount Union started the quarter on a 4-0 run but that lead never grew to any more as the Gators continually answered each Mount Union basket with one of their own.

With 2:30 to go, Rylee Donovan tied the game at 66 on a free throw.  Arbore converted a traditional three-point play 30 seconds later to give the Gators a 69-66 lead.  After a Raider layup, Arbore hit a floater in the paint to make it 71-68 lead with a minute to play.

Crawford drew a foul on a drive with 33 seconds to go and converted both free-throw opportunities to give the Gators a five point lead, 73-68.  After a missed three by Mount Union, Donovan increased the lead with a pair of free throws.  Donovan added one more following a Raider layup to cap the nonconference win for the Gators.

Arbore finished the game with 21 points, four rebounds and two assists.  She hit four-of-seven three pointers.  Donovan tallied 18 points with four rebounds and a pair of assists, going four-of-eight from three.  Crawford also finished in double digits with 11 points.  Kaylah Pinkney and Soilis had seven points apiece and combined for 17 rebounds.  Caufield had six rebounds to go with five points.

For the game, the Gators shot 36.9% (24-of-65), including 11-of-29 (37.9%) on threes.  One of the big differences in the game came on rebounds, as Allegheny won that battle 44-38.  Of the 44 rebounds, 15 came on the offensive glass, compared to just eight from Mount Union.

The Gators wrap-up their four game homestand Saturday (Nov. 25) aginst Washington and Jefferson in a nonconference game.
