WITTENBERG, Ohio— The Allegheny College men's soccer team exploded for seven goals as they topped Wittenberg University 7-2 Saturday (Oct. 21) in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action.
Izaak Miller scored four goals and assisted on another. The four goals are tied for second all-time in Gator single game history. The last time a Gator scored four goals in game was on October 8, 1977 when David Nelson did it against John Carroll University. Miller's nine total points are also good for second all-time in program history, while it marked the first nine-point output since Sept. 9, 1988 when Scott Velso did it against Medgar Evers.
The seven goals marked the most since the Gators scored eight in a shutout win against Pitt-Bradford in 1993.
The Gators were aggressive early on, putting four shots on net in the opening 14 minutes of the game.
On his third shot of the game,
Danny Reid found paydirt as he put the Gators in front on a 17
th minute goal.
After a save by goalie
David Stekla in the 19
th minute, the Gators got right back to work. After Miller hit the crossbar on a header, he followed up by burying it in the back of the net, increasing the lead to 2-0.
The Tigers made up some ground in the 29
th minute as Nick Togliatti scored off an assist by Cameron Ferguson to cut the lead to 2-1.
Reid put another shot on goal in the closing minutes of the half, but it was saved, as the Gators headed into halftime up 2-1.
Miller took over the game early in the second half. He netted his second goal of the game in the 49
th minute. It took him just another 26 seconds to find the back of the net again to complete the hat trick and increase the Gator lead to 5-1.
In the 62
nd minute, Miller scored his fourth goal of the game, tying the second most in a single game in Gator history.
Just two minutes later, Miller found
Tolossa Hassan for the Gators sixth goal, and Miller's ninth point.
The Tigers made up one of the goals a minute later to cut the lead to 6-2.
In the 71
st minute, Reid wrapped up the scoring with his second of the game.
In addition to Miller's nine points on four goals and one assist, Reid had four points on two goals. Hassan also had a goal.
Stekla finished the game with four saves.
Cory Wiard appeared in net to close the game, also making four saves.
"We had a great start today, focused and attacked well," said Gator Head Coach
Angelo Panzetta. "Contributions from everyone made it a great team win. It was great to have some bounces go our way and reward out hard work."
The Gators are back in action Wednesday (Oct. 25) on the road at NCAC foe College of Wooster.
