GRANVILLE, Ohio—The Allegheny College volleyball team fell in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) at Denison University 3-0 Saturday (Oct. 14).
Denison won the sets 25-17, 25-10, 25-22.
The Big Red got off to a fast start, taking a 5-2 lead in the opening set. The Gators stayed within striking distance but a 6-0 run midway through gave Denison a 20-12 lead. Allegheny pulled within six points at 23-17 but the Big Red won the final two points to take the set.
After trading points to open the second set, Denison went on a 7-0 run to take the lead, 10-3. The Big Red went on another 7-0 run midway through the set to put it of reach of the Gators as they took a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Big Red took another early lead in the third set but the Gators chipped away and tied the set at nine. Denison responded with a 4-0 run to regain control. The Gators kept the game close, utilizing a 3-0 run to bring he score within three at 22-19. After Denison won a point, the Gators won the ensuing two to pull within two points, 23-21. However, the teams traded the final three points, with Denison winning two of them, as the Big Red picked up the conference win.
Leah Franzluebbers and
Grace Lengauer led the Gators with seven kills apiece.
Hannah Cubarney finished with five while
Karissa Welker had four.
Justine Kelly had 18 assists.
Terra Schall led the Gator defensive front with 14 digs. Kelly had seven while
Kylee Karczewski and
Rachel Slotterback had five apiece.
The Gators are back at home Tuesday for a NCAC match against Hiram College at 7 p.m.
