OBERLIN, Ohio - Junior
Matt Svetz earned his first career victory, and helped the Gators to a fourth-place finish as a team at the 2017 Inter-Regional Rumble, hosted by Oberlin College.
In a race that featured competition from nearly a dozen Division III conferences, Svetz broke the tape in a time of 25:09.00 to roll to a four-second victory in the 8-kilometer jaunt. It was just the latest in a string of strong performances by Svetz thus far in his junior season, as he now owns three top-10 finishes in four races. Â
Svetz was one of two Gators to place in the top five, and one of three to finish in the top-15 of the 265-runner field. Â
Senior
John Hughes was Allegheny's number-two runner on the day, posting a time of 25:21.3 to take fifth overall. Named the North Coast Athletic Conference Runner of the Week on Oct. 2, Hughes now has three top-five finishes on the season. Â
Classmate
Carter Smith manned Allegheny's number three spot, as he turned in a time of 25:49.7 to finish 13th. Â
Ben Evans shaved nearly 40 seconds off of his previous 8-kilometer best of the season to place 57th in a time of 26:50.2Â
Sophomore
Benjamin Slack-Foust rounded out Allegheny's scoring five, turning in a new career personal record with a time of 27:02.6 to place 77th overall, just one second and two spots ahead of freshman teammate
Adam Cook, who was officially timed in 27:03.8.
As a team, Allegheny scored 153 points to place fourth in the 31-team field. DePauw University earned the team championship with a score of 83, with John Carroll taking second (106) and Mount Union third (125).Â
The Inter-Regional Rumble was Allegheny's final regular season tune-up, as coach
Ben Mourer and his Gators will not set their sights on the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship, scheduled for Oct. 28 in Oberlin. Â
