MEADVILLE, Pa. – Wooster used a prolific second half to secure a 91-67 win over the Gators in a North Coast Athletic Conference date in the David V. Wise Center.
Holding a five-point lead with just over 18 minutes left in regulation, the Fighting Scots (8-6, 5-2 NCAC) broke it open with a 20-7 run from which the Gators (4-10, 1-6 NCAC) were unable to recover.
Freshman
Jamison Nee scored 17 points to lead three Gators in double figures, while classmate
Jordan Rawls totaled 14 points, and senior
Conor Macomber 10.
Evan Zabriski added nine points and
Donte Wallette seven, but the Allegheny offense was hampered by 19 turnovers that led directly to 26 Wooster points.
The Fighting Scots threatened to run away with it early, as they took advantage of a cold Gator offense that managed just four field goals in the first 10 minutes to open up a 23-10 lead at the midway point of the half.
Allegheny would begin to chip away at the deficit, as a lay up from Rawls and a three-pointer by Macomber cutting the deficit to single digits, 23-15, with 8:49 left. Wallette and Zabriski followed by each nailing threes in a two-minute span to close the gap to 29-23 with just over three minutes left. The Fighting Scots answered with a trey 30 seconds later, but Rawls would score the final points of the half on the Gators' last possession, cutting the Wooster lead to 35-27 at the intermission.
In the defensive first half, Wooster shot 46 percent from the field (14-of-30) and Allegheny 33 percent (9-of-27), but the Gators were able to stay close thanks in part to a perfect 6-for-6 mark at the foul line. Rawls had 10 first half points to pace the Gators, while Macomber entered the locker room with seven markers.
The Gators seized the momentum coming out of the locker room, as
Brendan O'Toole connected on a hook shot inside on the Gators' first possession of the second frame, before Nee connected on a long three-pointer to pull Allegheny to within five, 37-32, with 18:23 left in regulation.
The tide would then quickly shift in favor of the visitors, who scored on five consecutive possessions to rattle off 11 unanswered points in a 90-second span and up their lead to 48-32. Macomber buried a three at the 15:30 mark to temporarily halt the Wooster momentum, but Wooster answered with six straight points to go in front 54-35 with 13:12 remaining in regulation, and Allegheny could not recover.
The Fighting Scots shot 63 percent (22-for-35) over the final 20 minutes of regulation, and held a 30-18 edge in points in the paint over the second half.
Spencer Williams led Wooster with 22 points, while teammate Danyon Hempy came off the bench to score 21.
The Gators turned in a strong night at the foul line, connecting on 15 of 18 freebies, led by Nee's perfect 7-for-7 performance. With two apiece, Nee and Macomber combined for four of the Gators' six three-point field goals.
Allegheny will take to the road for its next tilt, as the Gators are slated travel to Delaware, Ohio to face Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, Jan. 14 for a 3 p.m. date.
