SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Allegheny women's volleyball team was unable to halt its three-match losing skid, as they were defeated 3-0 at #6 Wittenberg.
Wittenberg won by set scores of 25-14, 25-18, and 25-12.
The host Tigers used an efficient offense, hitting at a .277 clip and committing just 10 attack errors.
Junior
Hannah Cubarney paced the Gator attack, putting down nine kills against just two errors. Freshman
Lauryn Long and junior
Leah Franzluebbers each had five kills.
With a match-high 19 digs, junior
Terra Schall vaulted into sixth place in program history for career digs, as her total of 1,463 surpassed Allegheny Hall of Fame member Molly Dietz, who tallied 1,461 for her career.
Schall was one of four Gators to post at least nine digs, as
Rachel Slotterback posted 10, and
Kylee Karczewski and
Justine Kelly nine apiece. Kelly also set 19 assists, while
Alysha Crowther and
Meghan Uht tallied the Gators' two blocks.
The first set was back-and-forth at the start, with five lead changes and four ties over the first 13 points. After a kill by Uht put the Gators up 8-7, Wittenberg roared back with an 8-3 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Gators wouldn't go away, with kills from Kelly and Cubarney trimming the gap to 15-13, but it was as close as they would get, as Wittenberg scored 10 of the final 11 points of the set to take the win.
The Tigers scored the first four points of set two, but after a pair of kills from Cubarney and one apiece by Long and Franzluebbers, Allegheny trimmed the deficit to 6-5. The teams would trade the next four points, before Wittenberg used another sustained rally, scoring six straight points to go in front 16-8, and the Gators were unable to recover from the eight-point deficit, with Tigers winning 25-18.
Wittenberg took control in a quick third set, scoring the first four points and never looking back en-route to the 25-12 win. The Gator offense struggled in the decisive set, hitting -.125 as they committed 10 errors against just five kills.
Allegheny will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 28, as they host Wooster at 7 p.m. in the Gators' first match in the friendly confines of the David V. Wise Center in three weeks.
