PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Allegheny women's soccer team saw its two-game winning streak snapped, as the Gators were edged 2-1 at #16 Carnegie Mellon in non-conference action.
Senior
Jessie Thiessen scored her fifth goal in the past three games late in the second half, but it wasn't enough, as a Tartan tally in the opening minute of the second stanza proved to be the difference.
Led by senior keeper
Colleen Fleming, the Gator defense turned in a valiant effort, as the Tartans owned a commanding 19-1 advantage in shots, and 10-0 margin in corner kicks. Fleming finished with 10 saves to match her career high.
The Tartans scored the game's first goal in the 14th minute, one a one-touch from Haili Adams from in close off of an entry pass from Megan Bartoshuk.
The hosts kept up the offensive pressure immediately following the opening strike, with Fleming keeping it a one-goal deficit with a save on a header on the doorstep off of a CMU corner in the 19th minute, while she replicated the feat on another corner five minutes later.
Carnegie Mellon has its best chance to add an insurance goal in the 29th minute, but the shot blasted off the inside of the post. Two minutes later, Fleming turned in her fourth save of the half on a shot from mid-distance to keep the deficit at one goal as the teams entered the intermission.
The Tartans got off to a fast start in the second half, with Adams scoring her second goal of the game off of an assist from Ryan Casey just 73 seconds into play. As they did following their first game, the Tartans upped the pressure, taking two corner kicks and three shots over the next nine minutes, but Fleming denied a pair of attempts to keep the score at 2-0.
Allegheny got on the board with just over seven minutes left in regulation. Thiessen corraled a long ball and beat a charging CMU keeper with a shot from 16 yards out for her team- and conference-leading fifth goal of the season to close out the game's scoring.
Over the final 45 minutes of play, the Tartans out-shot the Gators 10-1, with Fleming turning in six of her 10 saves.
The Gators will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 27, when they'll make the short trip south in Interstate 79 to New Wilmington to face Westminster College in a 7:30 p.m. non-conference bout.
