Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gators Edged by #21 Carnegie Mellon, 2-1

Nick Dias scored his second goal of the season in the narrow defeat

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Despite outshooting and earning more corner kick opportunities than No. 21 Carnegie Mellon, the Allegheny College men's soccer team fell to the nationally-ranked Tartans, 2-1, this evening in non-conference action.

Allegheny (2-4-1, 0-0 NCAC) doubled Carnegie Mellon (6-0, 0-0 UAA) with eight shots to the hosts' four, thanks in part to a 6-1 second half difference. Gator goal-scorer Nick Dias led the way with three attempts, two of which were put on net.

The Tartans needed just nine minutes to dent the scoreboard when Ryan Stinebaugh slotted in a rebound from Zack Masciopinto. CMU doubled its lead in the 66th minute after Greg Bellwoar deflected a free kick from Devin Keane.

The visitors threatened in the moments leading up to the Tartans' second goal with shots from junior forward Bryce Evans, senior midfielder Jack Walsh, and fourth-year defender Aaron Donahoe, but couldn't put one past CMU goalkeeper Jack Sampiere.

Allegheny ramped up its urgency, making a quintet of substitutions in hopes of cutting the deficit in half. Its goal was achieved in the 73rd minute when a long throw-in from senior defender Liam McNamee caused a scramble, and Dias was there to clean up the mess for his second tally of the season.

The Gators had a chance at the equalizer six minutes later when Evans stood over the ball for a corner kick. Evans put his cross into a dangerous spot, but McNamee's attempt sailed wide of the net.

Senior goalkeeper Chris DeNelle made one save in the loss.

Allegheny begins the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) slate of its schedule on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1:00 p.m. when Wabash arrives in Meadville. The Gators will then return to non-conference play the following day at 3:00 p.m. against Mount Union.
