BRADFORD, Pa. - Senior
Jessie Thiessen's goal with two minutes left in the second overtime gave the Gators a 3-2 comeback win at Pitt-Bradford.
After
Isabella Martinez (pictured above) scored her first career goal late in the first half, assisted by Thiessen, the Panthers scored a pair of unanswered goals to go in front 2-1 with less than five minutes left in the second half. Thiessen's first goal of the game, in the 89th minute, sent the game into overtime, before the co-captain ended it with a golden goal with three minutes remaining in the second extra session.
Play was even for the first 19 minutes of play, before a save from Gator keeper
Colleen Fleming led to a sustained Allegheny offensive attack. The visitors had three chances in a four-minute span midway through the half, but a pair of
Kayla Dantona shots were blocked, while Martinez's first attempt of the game was saved.
The Gators continued to press, and finally got on the board with 14 minutes left in the half. Thiessen sent a high centering pass directly into the box, where it went right to Martinez who tapped it in from in close for her first goal of the season.
Momentum stayed with Allegheny as the half wound down, with the Gators tallying three more shots over the final eight minutes, but Bradford keeper Sarah Dailey turned each aside to keep it a one-goal game at the intermission.
The second half began as a defensive struggle, with the lone shot of the first 20 minutes resulting in a Fleming save. With 19 minutes remaining, the Gators had a pair of corner kicks in a 90-second time, but came up empty. Bradford then wrested the momentum, and Grace Dadzaa put her team on the board with a shot from the top of the box to tie it with 16 minutes left.
Allegheny had a huge chance to go ahead just a minute later, but Dailey turned aside a penalty kick in the 75th minute, before denying a shot from
Taylor Renk 40 seconds later. At the other end of the field, Fleming thwarted a corner kick deflection from up close at the 85-minute mark, but Bradford kept possession, and scored the go-ahead goal with 4:06 left on a high shot from Courtney Shade.
The Gators quickly countered, and with 1:10 left, Dantona sent in a pass toward the goal. Thiessen was able to corral it before a charging Dailey, and tapped it into the gaping net to tie the game and send it into overtime.
In the first extra stanza, Allegheny posted the first two shots, but Dantona's attempt three minutes in was saved by Dailey, before
Kayla Redner's effort in the 96th minute went just wide. Fleming turned aside the lone Bradford shot with 51 seconds remaining, sending the match into double overtime.
Allegheny went on the attack from the opening whistle, as Renk nearly ended it just 33 seconds in with a blast off the crossbar. Eighty seconds later, Thiessen was denied from up close, with the rebound off of Dailey going out of bounds, resulting in a Gator corner kick.
Redner floated the corner directly in front, and after a deflection, it ended up at Thiessen's feet. The two-time All-NCAC honoree then ended the game with a shot over Dailey into the top left corner of the net.
Allegheny ended the day with a commanding 16-6 advantage in shots, including an 11-6 edge in shots on goal. Dailey took the loss in goal despite making eight saves, while Fleming earned her first career win between the pipes by making four saves.
Five different Gators finished with at least two shots, led by four apiece from Dantona and Renk, and three by Thiessen.
With the win, the Gators improve to 1-3-1 on the season, while Pitt-Bradford drops to 2-3-1. Allegheny returns home for its next match, when it takes on SUNY-Fredonia at the Robertson Athletic Complex on Tuesday, Sept. 20 beginning at 4 p.m.
