Second Half Scores Propel Spartans Past Gators

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Allegheny women's soccer team was unable to hold onto a halftime lead, as host Case Western Reserve used a trio of second half goals to earn a 3-0 non-conference win.

Allegheny freshman Kayla Redner scored her first collegiate tally, off of a set piece in the 35th minute, but two Csae goals in the first 14 minutes of the second half proved to be the difference.  The loss moves the Gators' record to 0-2-1 on the season, while Case remains unbeaten at 3-0-1.

The Gator offense held the advantage in the early going, posting three shots and a corner kick in the first five minutes of play, but Spartan keeper Sarah Newcomb kept the game scoreless by making saves on attempts from Kayla Dantona and Isabella Martinez in a 50-second span.  The tables then turned, with the hosts rattling off the game's next seven shots, but Allegheny's Colleen Fleming, making her second career start in goal, turned in a trio of saves over a 14-minute span and the score remained zeroes.

In the 32nd minute, Allegheny's offense went on the attack, maintaining possession deep in the Spartan's end.  A shot from Taylor Renk was blocked out of bounds, setting up a corner kick.  The Gators kept the pressure up after the corner, drawing a whistle just outside of the box.  Redner then took the free kick, and lofted it into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead with 9:41 left in the half.

Case looked to promptly answer and received a pair of quality efforts moments after the Redner goal, but the Gator defense blocked one shot, while a second caromed off the post with six minutes left in the half.

Allegheny had the final shot of the half, but Newcomb denied Renk with two minutes left, and the Gators entered the intermission with the one-goal advantage.

The Spartans answered quickly after the break to tie it, as Melanie Kukura completed a long run by placing the ball inside the left corner of the net from 22 yards out just three minutes into the second frame.

Each team would tally three shots apiece over the next 10 minutes, but the Spartans would score the go-ahead goal after the Gators' second corner of the half.  The Spartans quickly cleared the ball from their end, springing Amy Lindberg into the open field for a breakaway goal with 29:17 left to play.

The Spartans maintained possession over the next several minutes, before the Gators looked to grasp the momentum over the final 10 minutes.  With eight minutes left, Jessie Thiessen missed just wide with an attempt from up close, before Renk ripped a shot over the crossbar 90 seconds later.  Allegheny kept the pressure on offensively, but Newcomb would then preserve the lead by making saves on Sierra Beaty in the 86th minute and Rank in the 89th.  The Spartans then took advantage of the plethora of Gators in the offensive end, as Lindberg was sprung for her second breakaway goal of the game with just 10 seconds left to seal the 3-1 win.

Case ended the afternoon with a 19-11 advantage in shots, while each team took five corner kicks.  Renk (4) and Dantona (2) each tallied multiple shots for the Gators, while Fleming totaled seven saves in goal.

The Gators will return to action on Wed. Sept. 14, as they open up their home slate with a 4:30 p.m. non-conference matchup against Grove City College.
