Allegheny Drops Second Game of Challenge to Grove City

The Wolverines scored once in the first half and twice in the final 45 minutes to earn a 3-0 win

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College men's soccer team was defeated by Grove City College, 3-0, in the final day of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) versus Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Challenge this afternoon.

Grove City (5-0, 0-0 PAC) held a statistical edge over Allegheny (1-2-1, 0-0 NCAC) in shots (14-8), shots on goal (8-3), and corner kicks (9-1).

The Gators created more scoring chances than their counterparts in the early going as senior defender Liam McNamee had an attempt saved in the eighth minute and junior forward Bryce Evans ripped a shot wide of the netting just four minutes later. In the 15th minute, however, Dale Reese gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead when he picked up a bouncing ball in front and chipped Allegheny goalkeeper David Stekla from 10 yards out.

One of the hosts' best chances came in the 27th minute off a free kick. The ball eventually found the head of junior forward Tolossa Hassan, but his header was saved off the line by a Grove City defender.

After Hassan had a shot attempt blocked, the Wolverines made it 2-0 off the counter in the 63rd minute. Grove City executed a flawless two-on-one break as Nate Curry set up Christian Caporaso with a lead pass, and Caporaso buried it with a one-timer finish.

The Wolverines had luck on their side with their third goal as the ball deflected right to Jon Burton off a strong tackle.

Stekla made five saves in the loss. Hassan and Evans each attempted a team-high two shots.

Allegheny continues a four-match home stand on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. against Baldwin Wallace University.
