MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College women's basketball team fell in a battle against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe Hiram College 67-56 Saturday (Dec. 10) in Meadville.
The teams went back-and-forth throughout the majority of the first quarter until the Terriers went on a 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. The Gators responded with a 5-0 run of their own. Those five points were all scored by
Delaney Arbore. In the waning seconds of the quarter,
Olivia Barkley stole the ball and converted a fast break layup to give the Gators a 16-14 lead heading into the second.
The Terriers scored the first seven points of the second to regain the advantage, 21-16. The Gators slowly chipped away and pulled within one, 23-22, with less than three to play in the half. However, the Terriers scored the final four points of the half as they owned a 27-22 lead at the half.
Madison Caufield led the Gators with six points in the opening half on three-of-four shooting. Arbore finished with five points in the 20 minutes while Barkley had four.
Jazmen Moore totaled six assists. Caufield and
Kiersten Librizzi had three rebounds apiece. Overall, the Gators shot 37% (10-of-27) in the opening half.
After exchanging baskets to start the third quarter, the Terriers start to slowly separate themselves, gaining a 43-30 advantage midway through. The Gators brought the lead down some but trailed 47-40 heading into the fourth.
The Terriers controlled the pace of the fourth, growing their lead to 60-45 midway through. With three-and-a-half to go, the lead increased to 17, 64-47. The Gators finished the game on a 7-1 run but it was not enough to overcome the advantage.
Barkley led the Gator offense, totaling 19 points on nine-of-11 shooting from the field. Arbore finished the game with 12 points and a pair of assists. Caufield also finished in double digits with 10. Moore tallied seven assists.
Overall, the Gators shot 38.7% (24-of-62) from the field.
Caufield led the Gator defense with eight rebounds while Barkley collected six. Arbore and
Zoe Soilis had five boards apiece.
The Gators are back in action Monday (Dec. 12) when they travel to Alfred University for a nonconference contest.
