Gators Swept by Yeowomen in NCAC Clash

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny volleyball team was unable to snap its losing skid, falling 3-0 to North Coast Athletic Conference foe Oberlin in the David V. Wise Center.

Oberlin claimed a tight first set by a 25-23 score, before closing out the 3-0 win with scores of 25-20 and 25-14.

Juniors Leah Franzluebbers and Hannah Cubarney each had seven kills to share the Allegheny team lead, while Terra Schall posted a team-best 14 digs.

In the first set, the teams traded the first eight points, before Oberlin scored six straight points to go up 10-5.  An Oberlin service error, followed by an ace from the Gators' Kylee Karczewski, but the deficit to 10-7, before the Gators eventually cut the gap to 13-12 after a kills from Justine Kelly and Alysha Crowther, and a solo block by Franzluebbers.  The Yeowomen would score the next five points, but the Gators roared back with a 5-1 run to tie it at 18 after an Oberlin error.  The teams continued to trade points down the stretch, with the Gators tying it at 22 on a Franzluebbers kill, and at 23-all on a Cubarney put down, but the Yeowomen scored the final two points to close out the 25-23 win.  Seven different players accounted for the 10 Allegheny kills in the opener, while Schall got off to a big start defensively with seven first-set kills.

The Gators earned the first point of the second set on an Oberlin error, but the Yeowomen rebounded to jump out to a 14-6 lead, thanks in part to three service aces.  The Yeowomen advantage eventually swelled to 17-8, before the Gators looked to mount a comeback.  The Gators trimmed the gap to five, 19-14, on a pair of kills from Karissa Welker and two Oberlin errors, and moments later, another Oberlin miscue and another put down from Welker pulled the Gators to within 23-20.  Again, the Yeowomen scored the final two points, closing the 25-20 decision with a tandem block at the net.

The third set was back-and-forth for the early stages, with the Gators pulling out to leads of 3-2 and 5-4 after a pair of Yeowomen errors and a kill from Cubarney, but after that, the visitors pulled away.  After a five-point Oberlin run was temporarily halted by a Rachel Slotterback ace to make it 14-10, the Yeowomen rattled off seven straight points to take a commanding 21-10 advantage, with three of the points coming via the service ace.  Allegheny cut the gap to single digits after a tandem block from Franzluebbers and Cubarney, followed by a kill by Kelly, but Oberlin quickly scored the final two points of the night to take the three-set victory.

Kelly finished with a line of 20 assists, five kills, five digs, and a pair of assisted blocks for Allegheny, while Franzluebbers had a hand in four stuffs at the net.

Oberlin was led by the duo of Sara Chang and Dana Thomas, with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while Emily Kelkar finished with 13 digs.

Allegheny will now have a 10-day respite coinciding with fall break, before returning to action on Sat. Oct. 15 against NCAC foe Denison in a 5 p.m. match on #Battle4Bridget Night.  That evening, funds will be collected for Meadville's Barco Oncology Center in honor of head coach Bridget Sheehan, who is currently on a leave of absence while battling cancer.
