BROCKPORT, N.Y.— Despite
Terra Schall's school-record-tying 36 digs in the Gators' second match of the day, the Allegheny College volleyball team fell in a pair of contests Saturday (Oct. 29) to the College of Brockport and the University of Scranton on day two of the Golden Eagle Invite.
Saturday's matches marked the season finale for the Gators.
In the first action of the day, Brockport picked up the sets 25-19, 25-14 and 25-14.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the opening set but the Gators went on a 4-0 run to gain the lead. However, the Golden Eagles responded with a 7-0 run to regain control. Following a timeout, the Gators pulled back within three, 17-14, but that was as close as they got as the Golden Eagles secured the set win 25-19.
The momentum from the first set carried into the second as the Golden Eagles won the opening five points of the second set. The Gators quickly made up ground to bring the game within two, 6-4, though the Golden Eagles controlled the pace of the set as they won it 25-14.
The third set started with back-and-forth action as the teams matched each other early on. The Golden Eagles found the first advantage of the set when they went on a 7-0 run to gain a 14-5 advantage. The Gators called a timeout and responded by scoring the ensuing three points but the early deficit proved too much as they fell 25-14 in the third set.
Alysha Crowther and
Hannah Cubarney led the Gator offense seven kills apiece.
Leah Franzluebbers added six.
Justine Kelly assisted on 23 points.
Defensively,
Terra Schall led the Gators with 18 digs.
Karissa Welker also reached a double digit dig total with 11 while Kelly had nine.
Scranton defeated the Gators 25-20, 25-18 and 25-13.
The teams matched each other in the early parts of the opening set as the Gators gained a 12-11 lead. However, the Lady Royals went on a 4-0 run to take control. The Gators fought back to bring the set within one, 18-17. The Lady Royals though scored the next two points to extend their lead to three. Leading 22-20, the Lady Royals scored the next three points to secure the opening set win, 25-20.
The second set began in a similar fashion as the first as the teams went back-and-forth until the Lady Royals went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. The Gators answered with a 4-1 run to cut the gap to one. However, the Lady Royal responded with a 7-0 run to gain control of the set and pick up the 25-18 win.
The Lady Royals opened the final set by scoring the first 11 points. The Gators made up some ground by scoring six of the next eight points but the deficit was too much to overcome as they fell 25-13.
Franzluebbers led the Gators with eight kills. Cubarney had six kills while Crowther had five. Kelly assisted on 12 points while
Raelynn Dorscheid had 10 assists,
Defensively, Schall tied a 10-year old three-set record with 36 digs.
Kylee Karczewski and Kelly were also in double digits in digs with 13 and 12, respectively.
