Gators Come Back to Earn Double-OT Win at Kenyon

Allegheny scored the game-winner on a Kenyon own goal two minutes into the second OT

GAMBIER, Ohio – Trailing 1-0 early in the second half, the Allegheny women's soccer team came back to earn a 2-1 double-overtime victory over host Kenyon on a chilly day at Mavec Field.

After sophomore Isabella Martinez's second goal of the season, assisted by Jessie Thiessen, tied the game in the 53rd minute, the teams played 50 scoreless minutes, before Kayla Redner's shot off of a caromed corner kick took a fortuitous bounce off of a Kenyon defender and into the net for the Gators' golden goal.

Outshot 21-7, the Gator defense turned in another strong performance, led by senior goalkeeper Colleen Fleming.  The converted midfielder went the distance between the pipes and finished with 12 saves, including seven in the second half to force the game into overtime.

The Ladies tested the Gator defense early, tallying four shots and a corner kick in the first 17 minutes of play, with Fleming making a pair of stops.  Play evened out over the next several minutes, until Kenyon's Maggie Smith connected for her 10th goal of the season to put the hosts up 1-0 in the 27th minute.

The game then took on a defensive theme, with the teams trading just one shot apiece over the final 16 minutes of the half, and the score remained 1-0 at the intermission.

Fleming made a pair of saves in the first four minutes of the second half, before the Gators went on the attack.  In the 52nd minute, Thiessen sent a cross toward the box, where it was blasted in by Martinez to tie the game at 1-all.

After the Thiessen chance, Kenyon again took control, but Fleming came up big, making three saves between the 62nd and 68th minutes.   Allegheny's last two chances of the half went wide, before the Gators withstood a pair of Kenyon corner kicks in the last minute of regulation to preserve the 1-1 tie.

In the first extra session, Kenyon had the only two shots, with one saved by Fleming and another blocked by the Gator back line.  Fleming again preserved the tie with a save 70 seconds into the second overtime, before the Gators countered for their eventual game-winning attack.

A shot by Redner 2:40 in was saved by Kenyon keeper Jillian Courtney, with the rebound caroming over the end line for an Allegheny corner.  Redner then lofted the corner kick toward the goal box, where it deflected off of a Kenyon defender and into the net to end the game.

With the win, Allegheny improves to 6-8-1 overall, and 3-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Kenyon falls to 6-7-2, and 4-2-1 in the NCAC.

The Gators enter the final week of the season still alive for the four-team NCAC Championship Tournament.  Allegheny will open the week with a crucial Wednesday night matchup against Wooster, with whom they are currently tied in the NCAC standings.  The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. under the lights at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
