Gators Split Once More in Williamsport

Allegheny pushed its record to 6-4 with a victory over York (Pa.) College and a defeat to Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Allegheny College volleyball sophomore Justine Kelly was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Lycoming Warrior Tip-Off Classic as the Gators split their two matches on the final day of the invitational this morning.

Allegheny (6-4, 0-0 NCAC) fell to Lycoming in four sets to begin the day (18-25, 25-19, 20-25, 16-25) before rebounding with a three-set sweep of York (Pa.) College (27-25, 25-19, 25-23). Overall, the Gators went 2-2 at the invitational.

Kelly dished out a total of 121 assists and collected 34 digs over the two days. The Evergreen State native registered 26 helpers against both the Warriors and Spartans and added a total of 17 digs.

Against the Warriors, senior outside hitter Taylor Samuel tallied a team-high 13 kills, 13 digs, and three service aces to record her first of two double-doubles on the day. Sophomore libero Terra Schall collected 33 digs, marking the fourth time in this early season in which she has reached at least 30.

Schall was one of four players with double-digit digs against Lycoming, joining the aforementioned Samuel, senior outside hitter Julia Weeks (13), and sophomore defensive specialist Kylee Karczewski (11). Sophomore middle hitter Leah Franzluebbers was a force at the net with six total blocks (two solo, four assist).

Allegheny's sixth win of the season came in a familiar fashion as it won in straight sets. All six Gator victories thus far have come in three sets, with their opponents scoring less than 20 points in a frame 56 percent of the time.

Samuel again led the team with 13 kills and three service aces. She added 14 digs defensively, tying for the team lead with Schall. Freshman defensive specialist Rachel Slotterback was also in double-figures for digs with 13.

Junior outside hitter Bailey Gawley tallied seven kills and three block assists against the Spartans. Senior middle hitter Sarah Swartz established a new career-high in blocks with eight (two solo, six assist), surpassing her previous best of seven, which was set three different times.

Allegheny returns to Meadville next weekend to begin a six-match home stand. The Gators are back in action on Friday, Sept. 18 at 6:00 p.m. when they take on Marymount.
