Blue Devils Top Gators in Season Opener

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Fredonia used a pair of goals early in the second half to top Allegheny 2-0 in the Gators' 2015 season-opener.

After the Blue Devils scored in the 52nd and 54th minutes, the Gators out-shot the hosts 7-0 over the game's final 30 minutes, but were unable to find the net, falling to 0-1 on the year.

Fredonia looked to seize control from the start, taking the game's first eight shots over the opening 21 minutes of play.  However, the Gator defense held strong, with sophomore keeper Tara Lynch making a pair of saves over the span to keep the match scoreless.

With just over 15 minutes left in the opening half, the Gators were granted their first corner kick of the evening, and held the better of the possession over the next several moments. After Gator senior Olivia Cushman's shot was saved with nine minutes left in the opening frame, the Blue Devils went back on the attack in the closing minutes of the half, attempting three shots in the 39th minute.  Another Lynch save kept Fredonia off the board, and the game entered halftime in a scoreless tie.

Over the first 45 minutes of play, the Blue Devils owned a 12-5 advantage in shots, while taking three of the game's four corners.

In the opening minutes of the second frame, the Gators owned the better of the play, with a corner kick and a pair of shots by Niki Augustine over the first five minutes.  The visitors were unable to break the scoreless tie, however, and Fredonia's Alexis Moreland scored the game's first goal, off of an assist from a long through ball by Ally Tatro, to go up 1-0 with 38 minutes left to play.

Fredonia went back on the attack, and just two minutes later, Tatro put back a rebound from right in front to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage with 35:30 left in regulation.

Allegheny countered to put together a number of long stretches of possession over the next several minutes.  The team's best chance to break the shutout came with 25 minutes left.  A blast from Donohue was saved by Fredonia keeper Kendall Owczarzak, with the rebound caroming out of bounds.  The ensuing corner kick from Lauren Miller went to teammate Brianna Layman, but Owczarzak made another key save to keep the Gators off the board.

With just under 18 minutes to go, the Gators were granted another corner kick, but again came up empty on a pair of shots.  With 15 minutes left, a blast from Augustine was again saved by Owczarzak, and it marked the final sustained scoring chance for the Gators, as neither team would attempt a shot over the remainder of the match.

For the game, the Blue Devils out-shot the Gators 18-14, with Allegheny holding a 9-6 advantage over the second stanza.  Owczarzak totaled six saves, including four in the final 30 minutes, to pick up the shutout victory, while Lynch also tallied six stops for the Gators.

Augustine and Cushman led the Gators in the shot column, with four apiece, while Donohue was credited with three.

Allegheny will return to action this weekend, taking part in the Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament in Rochester, New York.  The Gators will open the tourney on Saturday, taking on Rochester Institute of Technology beginning at 2 p.m.
