GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Allegheny College men's soccer team fell to Grove City College in its season opener on Tuesday evening by a final score of 4-0.
The Gators (0-1, 0-0 NCAC) kept the shot count even in the second half, rifling off a total of eight in the final 45 minutes. Allegheny also generated five corner kick opportunities on the contest.
The Wolverines (1-0, 0-0 PAC) dented the scoreboard in the 39th minute when Franklin Tropiano deflected a Justin Phillips feed off a corner kick. Grove City doubled its lead five minutes later thanks to a Gators own goal.
Seth Loew made it 3-0 for the hosts in the 69th minute with a tally from Nate Curry. Curry also assisted on the game's final goal in the 75th minute when he set Jon Burton.
Sophomore forward
Bryce Evans was the first player to generate a dangerous chance in the 10th minute, but his shot was stopped by Ben Weaver. Evans gave himself another chance late in the second half; however, it suffered the same fate.
Senior goalkeeper
Jake Pugliese made six saves in 82:22 before giving way to sophomore
David Stekla, who stopped the only shot he faced in the match's closing minutes.
Allegheny is back in action this weekend when it competes in the Carnegie Mellon Tournament. The Gators play Messiah College at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and close the invite with La Roche College at the same time on Saturday.
