MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Gators were on the wrong end of a pair of shutouts in their non-conference doubleheader at the Robertson Athletic Complex, with Case Western Reserve winning the opener 1-0, before closing the sweep with a 7-0 whitewash in the the nightcap.
Game one was a classic pitcher's duel, as the two teams combined for just eight hits and 15 strikeouts, while in the nightcap, Case jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, and the Gators were unable to come up with timely hits, stranding a total of seven runners.
The Gators fall to 13-12-1 after the two losses, while Case ends the regular season with a 32-10 mark.
In the opener, Gator starter
Caitlin Nealer continued her stellar senior campaign, throwing all seven innings and allowing just one run on three hits with eight strikeouts, but was saddled with the hard-luck loss. She was forced to pitch out of trouble early, as the Spartans loaded the bases on a hit batter, single, and walk, but Nealer escaped with an inning-ending pop up.
The Gators looked to take an early lead in the bottom of the first, with
Alexis Ryan and Nealer each singling, but Case hurler Annie Wennerberg got out of trouble with a strikeout and fly out.
Case pushed across the game's lone run in the top of the second, taking advantage of a control lapse by Nealer and a tight strike zone to draw a two-out walk with the bases loaded to make the score 1-0.
From there, Nealer was dominant, striking out seven and allowing just three base runners over the final five innings.
Wennerberg was just as effective for the Spartans. After surrendering a walk to
Taylor Massart to lead off the bottom of the second, the Case sophomore retired the next 10 batters in order to take the 1-0 shutout into the sixth, when the Gators put together their first real scoring threat of the afternoon. Ryan led off the frame with a single, but was caught stealing. With two outs, Nealer stroked her second hit of the day on a double to right center, before
Sadie Stuart was hit by a pitch. However, Wennerberg got an inning ending ground out to escape harm.
The Gators again put the leadoff runner on in the bottom of the seventh, as
Hannah Blinn reached on a pop up that was misplayed, before giving way to pinch runner
Rachel Ramsey, who moved to second after a two-out single by
Jessica Zavolta. However, Wennerberg got another ground out that retired Zavolta at second base to end the game.
Allegheny totaled five hits in the game one loss, with Zavolta's single and the 2-for-3 efforts by Ryan and Nealer. Wennerberg earned the shutout victory, striking out seven against just one walk.
After a scoreless top of the first, the Gators looked poised to score their first runs of the day in the bottom half of the frame, loading the bases with two outs after
Jaricka Simmerman singled, Stuart was hit by a pitch, and
Allie Landowski walked. The bases were left jammed, however, after Case starter Rebecca Taylor closed the inning with a strikeout.
The Spartans used two singles, an error, and a walk to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, before the Gators countered by putting two on in the bottom half, as
Abrianna Sadler reached on an error and Ryan singled, However, they were again left stranded, and the Gator deficit remained two. Case would go on to add single runs in both the third and fourth innings to up te lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Gators saw another scoring opportunity thwarted, as Landowski and
Hailey Marthaler each hit one-out singles, before the Spartans got a double play to end the frame.
Case put the game away with their final three runs in the top of the seventh, and Taylor closed the game with a one-two-three seventh to seal the win.
The Gators posted just five hits in the nightcap, with Simmerman leading the way by going 2-for-3.
Allison Cabo went the distance in the circle for Allegheny, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits (all singles), while striking out three. Taylor improved to 11-0 on the year for the Spartans, striking out six in the complete game shutout.
Allegheny will now close out the regular season on Monday, hosting North Coast Athletic Conference rival Hiram beginning at 4 p.m. at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
