OBERLIN, Ohio – Allegheny moved its winning streak to eight games, and improved to 7-3 in the conference, after sweeping Oberlin by scores of 10-7 and 8-3.
In the opener, the Gators scored four runs in the ninth inning to come back from a one-run deficit. In game two, Allegheny received a solid pitching performance from
Corey Keenan, and big home runs from
Adam Bronson and
Jacob Shick, to seal the sweep.
Game one was a back-and-forth affair throughout. Oberlin drew first blood, taking advantage of a pair of hit batsmen and a walk to jump in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
The Gators came right back to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the next frame. Bronson was hit by a pitch to lead off, and after moving to second on a
Robert DiMaggio sacrifice bunt, scored on an RBI single to center by
Patrick Orr. Orr would move to third after
Cullen Flaherty reached on an error, and then score the second Allegheny run of the frame on a wild pitch.
The one-run advantage was short-lived, as a two-out, two-run homer from Jeff Schweighoffer put the Yeomen back in front, 3-2.
Allegheny then used a three-run fourth inning to gain a two-run lead. DiMaggio led off by reaching on an error, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Orr. Two batters later,
Dan Bonnett doubled to bring home DiMaggio, before Bonnett scored on a single from
Zach Gray to make the score 4-3.
Joe Killian and Shick followed with back-to-back singles, with Shick's plating Bonnett and giving the Gators a 5-3 advantage.
The Gators added on a run in the top of the fifth.
Tyler Wagner led off with a double, and after he moved to third on a DiMaggio single, Wagner scored on an errant pickoff throw from the catcher to make the score 6-3.
Oberlin quickly answered, tying the game on a three-run double from Ryan Bliss in the bottom of the fifth, before taking a 7-6 lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Kyle Decker.
The Gators answered the Yeomen's blow with a four-run seventh inning. DiMaggio began the inning with a single to center, and with one out, pinch hitter
Ben Murray drew a free pass. Bonnett then brought home DiMaggio for a second time in the game with an RBI single to right, while
Andrew Dawson, pinch running for Murray, came home on a single from Gray. Killian reached on an error to bring home Bonnett, and Shick put a cap on the long inning with a sacrifice fly to score Gray and make the score 10-7.
Allegheny reliever
Jameson Murray then shut the door in the bottom of the seventh, getting a pair of K's and a pop up to close out the victory.
The Gators out-hit the Yeomen in the opener 12-7, with seven different players recording at least one hit. Bonnett led the way, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Gray (2-for-2, two RBIs, two runs), Wagner (two doubles), and DiMaggio (2-for-4, two runs scored) each added multi-hit games.
Murray got the win, allowing one run with three strikeouts over the final two innings in relief of starter
Chase Boyer.
In game two, the Yeomen got on the board first with a one-out RBI double from Bliss in the second inning, but as was the case in the opener, the Gators answered right back in the top of the third. DiMaggio led off with a single to center, and after moving to second on a groundout, scored the game-tying run on Gray's two-out single.
The Gators took their first lead of the game in the fifth when Wagner doubled to lead off, moved to third on a DiMaggio single, and scored on Flaherty's groundout to make it 2-1.
After Oberlin scored a single tally in the bottom of the fifth, the Gators went ahead for good in the top of the sixth. With one out, Killian sneaked a double inside the third base line, before Bronson connected with two outs on a blast to left field for his first homer of the season to put the Gators in front 4-2.
Keenan then kept the Yeomen at bay retiring nine of the final 10 batters he faced to keep the two-run lead in tact.
After leaving the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, the Gators put an exclamation point on the victory in the ninth. Flaherty and Bonnett opened the frame with back-to-back singles, and with one out, a walk to Killian loaded the bases. Shick, the reigning NCAC Player of the Week, then deposited a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left center for his first career grand slam, making the score 8-2.
On in relief of Keenan,
Paul Vojtek closed the door with a one-two-three ninth inning, ending the game by making a diving grab on a short pop up.
The Gators tallied 11 hits in the victory, with eight of the team's nine starters recording at least one hit. Wagner and DiMaggio repeated their two-hit efforts from game one, with the former finishing the nightcap 2-for-4, and the latter 2-for-3, while Shick was a third Gator to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5.
Keenan started and worked seven strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks to improve to 3-0 on the year. Vojtek earned his second save of the season with two perfect innings of work.
Looking to remain red hot, the Gators will close out the four-game weekend set with Oberlin with another doubleheader on Sunday. Originally scheduled for 12 p.m., the start time has been moved up to 10 a.m. due to expected poor weather.
