Offense Sends Gators to Win over No. 24 John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – After a weekend sweep of the Hiram Terriers, the Gators look to be on the right foot heading into the final stages of the season, evidenced by a monster offensive outburst that pushed the Blue and Gold past the No. 24 John Carroll Blue Streaks, 16-10, on Wednesday evening at Schewickert Field.

The Gators (12-11, 5-3 NCAC) were paced offensively by the top of the lineup, as Allegheny's one through four hitters combined for nine of the squad's 12 hits, highlighted by a 3-for-4 performance by freshman Dan Bonnett that included two RBI and three runs scored.  Senior Zach Gray went 2-for-4, scoring a pair of runs.  Sophomore Jacob Shick, who earned North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Player of the Week honors on Monday, continued his impressive offensive exploits over the last seven days, batting 3-for-5 while tying Bonnett and senior Adam Bronson with a pair of runs driven in, additionally tying Bonnett with three runs scored.

Sophomore Corey Marshall picked up his third win of the season on the mound, hurling two innings pitched.  Senior Ben Murray scattered a pair of hits, scoring two runs and driving in an additional run for the Gators as freshmen Tyler Wagner and Cullen Flaherty each crossed the plate twice for the Blue and Gold.

Allegheny kicked off the offensive affair by plating a run in the first inning, as a one-out walk by Gray set the stage for Shick to drive the senior home with a single to left, giving the Gators the early, 1-0 run.  John Carroll tied the game in the bottom of the second to tie the game briefly before Allegheny struck back with two runs in the third.  Flaherty opened the inning with a walk before a double down the left field line by Bonnett moved the freshman to third.  A fielder's choice by junior Joe Killian plated Flaherty and a grounder by Shick scored Bonnett to give Allegheny a 3-1 advantage.

In the fourth inning, Allegheny erupted for six runs on four hits and three miscues by John Carroll, as the key play occurred with bases loaded and Bonnett up to bat.  A single to center turned into a three-run play as an error by the Blue Streaks' center fielder provided the opportunity for Flaherty, sophomore Patrick Orr and Murray to cross the plate.  A single through the left side by Bronson that scored Shick and made the score 9-1 closed the scoring for the Gators in the fourth.

Five runs in the bottom of the fourth by the Blue Streaks sliced into the Gator lead, as Allegheny returned the lead to four after a run in the fifth courtesy of a single through the left side by Bonnett scored Murray.   In the sixth, Wagner reached on a fielding error, allowing Shick to score.  A double by Murray and sacrifice fly by Orr scored Bronson and Wagner, respectively, give the squad a 13-6 lead.

The Allegheny offense continued putting pressure on John Carroll, answering a three-run inning in the bottom of the sixth with three runs in the top of the seventh, a pair of which were scored after yet another John Carroll error.

Junior Hayden Smith came in relief during the fifth inning, hurling 2.2 innings of relief, only allowing one run on four hits.  Senior Paul Vojtek came in to shut the door in the ninth inning, sending the Gators to their fifth consecutive win.

Allegheny will next host Thiel on Thursday, April 16th before traveling to Oberlin for another NCAC East divisional series set to start at 12 p.m. on April 18th.
