CLEVELAND, Ohio – Another stellar pitching performance by Gator sophomore
Chase Boyer and an explosive offensive outing in the nightcap fueled the Allegheny baseball squad to a Saturday sweep of the Hiram Terriers at League Field. Allegheny would pick up a 5-1 win in the opener before posting a 7-4 decision in the second game of the doubleheader.
Boyer picked up his third win of the season with a complete-game, seven-inning outing, only allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven batters. In game two, sophomore
Corey Marshall picked up the win with a two-inning outing as freshman
Jameson Murray scored his second save of the season with 1.1 innings of work.
Offensively, sophomore
Jacob Shick made a key play in game two, crushing an inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning to put the Gators ahead for good. Shick finished the nightcap 3-for-5, scoring a pair of runs. Sophomore
Robert DiMaggio also contributed in the Gators' offensive outburst in game two, batting 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
In game one, freshman
Cullen Flaherty went 2-for-3 from the plate, driving in a run as senior
Adam Bronson went 2-for-4. Junior
Joe Killian and freshman
Tyler Wagner also contributed, driving in critical ones to help the Gators to the game one win.
Hiram plated a run in the bottom of the first to kick off game one before the Gators tied up the game in the top of the second. Bronson hit a one-out single up the left side of the field, moving to third on a wild pitch before Wagner drove home the senior with a sacrifice fly to right. In the third, the Gators took the lead after Killian drove in senior
Zach Gray, who hit a one-out double to right to swing the scales towards the favor of the visitors.
In the fourth, sophomore
Kyle Emerson kicked off the inning with a single to center before sophomore
Patrick Orr reached base on an error. Flaherty launched a single to right to plate Emerson before freshman
Dan Bonnett reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Orr to score the Gators' fourth run. Boyer retired the Terriers in order in the fourth and fifth innings, only allowing a pair of runners in scoring position down the stretch before closing the door in the seventh, while the Gators tacked on an insurance run after Shick crossed the plate on a passed ball in the fifth.
Game two saw the Gators take the early lead, as a double by Shick to lead off the second inning resulted in a 1-0 lead after a single through the left side by Wagner. Hiram scored four runs in the third on five hits, sending the two squads into the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Killian and Shick put two runners aboard in the top of the fourth, as a double play started the rally as Bronson was able to score on the play.
DiMaggio picked up a one-out single in the fifth, as a single by Bonnett put a pair of runners aboard before a groundout by Gray moved both into scoring position. Killian drove both runners in with a single to right, tying the game up at 4-4 before Shick's home run put the Gators ahead for good. In the seventh, DiMaggio again kick-started the Gators offense, as a triple to center by Gray scored DiMaggio before a sacrifice fly by Killian allowed the junior to pick up his third RBI of the game, scoring Allegheny's seventh run.
Murray entered with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, picking up the last out of the inning before returning in the ninth, forcing a double play after a the lead-off batter reached base on an error and ending the game on a strikeout to give the Gators the Saturday sweep.
Allegheny will close out the series with Hiram at 12 p.m. on Sunday in Hiram, Ohio.
