CLERMONT, Fla. – Behind sophomore
Alexis Ryan's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning, Allegheny closed out its 2015 spring break excursion to Florida in fine fashion, as they defeated Keene State 4-3.
Ryan's single, which allowed
Belle Mazurik to cross the plate with the winning run, capped off the comeback win for the Gators, who trailed 3-1 in the fourth inning before scoring the game's final three runs.
A day after recording her first career save, sophomore
Allison Cabo earned her first win of the season in the circle. She went all seven innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out one.
The Owls struck first to take an early 1-0 lead, scoring the game's first run after opening the first inning with a pair of singles and a walk before recording an out. Cabo then got out of trouble, stranding two runners on after recording the final three outs in order.
Allegheny manufactured a run in the bottom of the first to even the score. With one out, Ryan walked, and moved to second after
Caitlin Nealer reached on an error. After another walk to
Sadie Stuart loaded the bases, Ryan crossed the plate on an
Allie Landowski sacrifice fly to make it 1-1.
Keene State used a similar formula in the second as they did in the top of the first to regain a one-run lead, sandwiching a walk between a pair of singles to plate the go-ahead run. The Owls eventually loaded the bases with two outs, but Cabo again escaped the jam by getting an inning-ending pop up.
After the Owls added a single run in the top of the fourth to up their lead to 3-1, the Gators mounted the comeback trail with a rally in the bottom half of the frame. With one out, Blinn singled, and gave way to pinch runner
Shannen Segiel, who moved to second after a two-out walk to
Jessica Zavolta. Simmerman's single to left loaded the bases, before Mazurik reached on an error, moving Zavolta to third and scoring Segiel to make it 3-2. Two pitches later, Zavolta scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-all.
Cabo responded by shutting down Keene State over the final three frames, allowing just one hit between the fifth and seventh innings leading up to the late-game Gator heroics.
In the decisive bottom of the seventh, Mazurik led off with an infield single, before scoring all the way from first on Ryan's shot to center field to end the game.
Mazurik led the Gator offense with two of their five hits in the win, as she finished off the Florida trip with a team-best .387 batting average. Blinn, Simmerman, and Ryan added one hit apiece for the Gators, while Zavolta reached base twice on walks.
Keene State (4-7) was led offensively by the duo of Shae Crosby and Stephanie Long, who recorded two hits apiece. Lindsey Musco took the loss in the circle, working the final 2 1/3 innings and allowing the game-winning run in the seventh.
Allegheny is now scheduled to open up the northern portion of their schedule on Wed. Mar. 25 with a 3:30 non-conference doubleheader at Grove City.
