Lords Use Second Half Rally to Top Gators

BOX SCORE

GAMBIER, Ohio –
A lengthy run midway through the second half vaulted host Kenyon to a 74-62 victory over Allegheny.

Leading 49-43 with 12 minutes left in regulation, the Gators (2-7, 2-1 NCAC) saw the Lords take control with a 19-3 run that spanned eight minutes.  Allegheny pulled to within six with three minutes left, but Kenyon put the game away with 10 free throws over the final 120 seconds of play.

Chris Milon paced the Gators with 17 points, connecting on 7 of 11 attempts from the floor, while Andrew Sestina and Evan Zabriski added eight points apiece.  For the game, both teams connected on 23 field goals, but the difference came at the charity stripe, as the Lords went 19-for-21 on free throws, compared to the Gators' 8-for-14.

Kenyon's offense got off to a strong start, connecting on eight of their first 12 shots from the field to open up leads of 9-2 and 18-9 over the first six minutes of play.

The Gators answered back to score 13 points in just over three minutes of play, with Sestina hitting two three-pointers, Billy Urso one trifecta, and Milon a pair of layups, to trim the gap to 24-22 with 10:30 left in the half.

The offensive pace then slowed, and the Lords would see their lead jump back to six, 32-26, at the five-minute mark.  Allegheny's Brian Holland and Chris Koryak then proceeded to cash in on three-pointers on consecutive possessions to tie the game at 34-all with 1:49 left, before the Lords would enter halftime with a 37-36 lead.

As was the case three days earlier in a win at Wittenberg, the Gators stormed out of the gates to hold the momentum in the opening stages of the second half.  A Milon fast break dunk followed by a pull up jumper by Evan Schweitzer gave Allegheny its first lead of the night, 41-40, with 17 minutes left in regulation. Five minutes later, three-pointers from Holland and Zabriski sandwiched a Milon bucket in the paint to extend the Gator run to 13-5 and push the visitors in front 49-43 with just over 12 minutes remaining.

The tide would quickly turn, as the Gators were held without a field goal over the next 9:27, while the Lords embarked on a 19-3 run, with a trio of three-pointers over the span, to gain a 62-52 lead with 3:45 left.

Allegheny battled to pull back to within single digits, as a pair of Schweitzer free throws followed by a Zabriski bucket cut it to 63-56 with 2:12 left, but it was as close as the Gators would get the rest of the way.  The Lords went 10-for-11 from the foul line over the final two minutes to pull away for the win.

The Gators tallied 17 assists on their 23 field goals, with Schweitzer dishing a team-high six assists to go with five rebounds, which tied Zabriski for the team lead on the glass.

Tim Connolly led the way for Kenyon, scoring a game-high 32 points, including five three-pointers and an 11-for-11 mark from the foul line. Brien Comey and Chris Link shared the Kenyon lead with seven rebounds.

Allegheny will now enjoy a three-week sojourn for the semester break before returning to action on Dec. 30, when it hosts Grove City in a 3 p.m. non-conference clash at the David V. Wise Center.
