Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Allegheny Falls to #11 Calvin at Capital Holiday Tournament

Jessica Mrdjenovich scored a game-high 18 points on eight-of-14 shooting in the loss

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Allegheny College women's basketball team faced a tough test in their first game back from a 20-day break as the Gators were paired up with 11th-ranked Calvin College at the Capital University Holiday Tournament. Despite a game-high 18 points from senior guard Jessica Mrdjenovich, Allegheny fell to the Knights this evening, 86-67.

Allegheny (6-4, 2-0 NCAC) had two other players besides Mrdjenovich in double-figures scoring as senior forward Emma Pellicano and freshman guard Delaney Arbore each tallied 10. Pellicano added five steals and two blocks defensively, while Arbore made half of her four shots from behind the arc.

The Gators actually held a three-percent edge over Calvin (8-2, 2-0 MIAA) in field goal percentage (40.3 to 37.3), but the Knights had 83 field goal attempts to Allegheny's 67. Calvin also went to the free-throw stripe 25 times, making 15 of them, compared to the Gators' seven-for-10 performance from the chalk.

Freshman forward Kay Pinkney registered five points and seven rebounds off the bench – the latter tying a team-high for the contest. Senior forward Kaitlyn Fromknecht also grabbed seven caroms and blocked two shots, moving her total to 45 on the season. That number is eight shy of tying her career-high of 53, set in 2014-15.

The Knights were led by Bre Luurtsema, who scored a team-high 16 points. Anna Timmer posted a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Calvin took full advantage of Allegheny's miscues, scoring 32 points off turnovers. The Knights also owned a 25-11 difference in second chance points and 41-24 edge in bench points.

Allegheny is back in action tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. as it plays in the Capital University Holiday Tournament consolation game against either the host Crusaders or Misericordia University.
