SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Allegheny College volleyball sophomore libero
Terra Schall broke the program single-season record for digs this afternoon as the Gators completed their 2015 season with a four-set victory over Oberlin College (25-16, 21-25, 25-14, 25-17) and a five-set loss to Denison University (25-19, 25-13, 18-25, 16-25, 5-15) at the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament.
Schall finished her sophomore campaign with a total of 762 digs, 40 more than the previous record set by Adriana Pennekamp in 2005. The Kittanning, Pa. native collected 22 in Allegheny's (18-13) first match and 28 in their finale. She entered the weekend as the NCAA Division III leader in digs per set and completed the season with a mark of 6.68 in that category.
The Gators opened the second day of the tournament with a tough five-set loss to Denison (14-14). Freshman middle hitter
Bree Blair paced the team with eight kills and added a career-high eight block assists defensively. Junior outside hitter
Bailey Gawley also notched eight kills offensively, while sophomore
Hannah Cubarney tallied seven on a .227 hitting percentage.
Sophomore setter
Justine Kelly registered her ninth double-double of the season against the Big Red with 24 assists and 13 digs. Senior outside hitter
Taylor Samuel was Allegheny's third player with double-digit digs, also collecting 13.
Blair led a strong effort defensively as the Gators stopped 14 Denison attacks. Sophomore middle hitter
Leah Franzluebbers tallied six blocks (two solo, four assist), while Kelly added four block assists. Cubarney and classmate
Morgan Bush both chipped in on three denials at the net.
The Gators were able to rebound to claim seventh-place at the tournament with a four-set win over Oberlin (8-19). Gawley led Allegheny with 10 kills in the victory, while Franzluebbers and Kelly added five each.
Kelly dished out 27 assists against the Yeowomen and served three aces. Schall and fellow sophomore
Kylee Karczewski also registered a pair of service aces for the Gators.
Schall and Karczewski (14) were joined by Samuel in the double-digit club for digs as the Toms River, N.J. native collected 12 in her final game.
Senior middle hitter
Sarah Swartz paced the Gators at the net with seven blocks (two solo, five assist). Gawley chipped in on three stops, while Cubarney tallied three blocks (one solo, two assist).
Also donning the blue and gold for the last time was senior outside hitter
Julia Weeks. Weeks collected a kill and nine digs against the Big Red and a kill and nine digs versus Oberlin.
Allegheny finishes the season with an overall record of 18-13.
