MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny College women's basketball senior guard
Rachel Vigliotti posted the third double-double of her career, but it wasn't enough as the Gators fell to Washington & Jefferson College, 84-69, from the David V. Wise Center this evening.
Vigliotti scored a team-high 17 points and tied a career-high with 11 rebounds for Allegheny (2-3, 0-0 NCAC). Her last two double-doubles came in the 2014-15 season, against Waynesburg on Dec. 1 and Ohio Wesleyan on Valentine's Day.
Freshman guard
Delaney Arbore continued the strong start to her collegiate career as she tallied 14 points and four steals off the bench. Senior forward
Emma Pellicano was also in double-figures for the Gators, scoring 11 points to go along with seven offensive rebounds and three pickpockets.
Pellicano's classmate
Kaitlyn Fromknecht registered six blocks, a couple games after breaking the single-game program record with nine against Westminster.
Washington & Jefferson (3-1, 0-0 PAC) started the game on a 9-0 run before a Vigliotti trifecta gave Allegheny its first points. That lead was cut to two with an Arbore jumper and layup by Pellicano, but a pair of baskets at the other end made it 13-7 Presidents.
The visitors stretched their advantage to 17 early in the second quarter, but freshman guard
Candaisy Crawford stopped the bleeding with a successful cast from international waters. After Washington & Jefferson answered with a three-pointer of its own to regain the 17-point cushion, Vigliotti scored six unanswered points to make it 29-18 with 3:32 remaining in the half.
That 11-point edge would carry into halftime and sat at 13 with 3:14 left in the third quarter. That's when Arbore put together one of the most impressive stretches on the early season with nine consecutive points to cut the Presidents' lead to four. The rookie from North Huntingdon, Pa. converted a free-throw after being fouled on a made layup, then sank two three-pointers to put the pressure on the visitors.
Washington & Jefferson had an answer to close the frame however, as a quick 5-0 run made it 56-47 heading into the final quarter.
Vigliotti made a layup 31 seconds into the closing stanza to make it a seven-point deficit, but that's as close as the Gators would get it for the remainder of the contest.
Allegheny shot 33.8 percent (25-74) from the field and 26.5 percent (9-34) from behind the arc. The Presidents converted 44.4 percent (8-18) their three-point attempts and made 22-of-37 (59.5%) of their free-throws.
Washington & Jefferson had four players in double-figures, led by Beka Bellhy's 22 points. Taylor Cortazzo also joined Vigliotti in the double-double club with 19 points and 10 caroms.
Allegheny continues its six-game homestand – the longest in program history – on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 1:00 p.m. against Waynesburg University.
