MEADVILLE, Pa. – Behind a sharp-shooting offense, the visiting Adrian Bulldogs cruised past the Gators 84-51 on the opening night of the Greg Richards '08 Memorial Tip-Off Classic at the David V. Wise Center.z
Adrian, which improved to 3-0 with the victory, shot 58 percent from the field, including a 15-for-27 effort from behind the three-point arc. Conversely, the Gators (0-3) shot just 38 percent from the floor, including a 2-for-17 mark from distance.
The Gators trailed by just seven, 44-37, with 15 minutes left in regulation. Adrian then put the game away with a 20-2 run over a seven-minute span to go in front 64-39 at the 8-minute mark and never look back.
For the second time in three games, senior
Chris Milon came off the bench to lead the Gators with 19 points, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the field. Sophomore
Donte Wallette was the only other Gator to score in double-figures, bucketing 12, while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.
The Bulldogs roared out of the gates, opening the game on a 13-0 run over the game's first five minutes. A long three from freshman
Antonio Frisina, followed by a lay up by Milon, would temporarily halt the run and put the Gators on the board, before Adrian answered back to eventually go up by 15, 27-12 with nine minutes left in the first half.
Behind five points from Milon, the Gators chipped away at the deficit and eventually cut it to 10, 30-20, with 5:22 left in the half, before Milon threw down a fast break dunk off a long pass from
Chris Koryak to pull to within eight, 34-26, with 2:39 remaining.
Adrian would end the first half in the same fashion it started, connecting on three-pointers on its final two possessions to take a 40-26 lead into the break.
The teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second half, before the Gators again mounted a rally. With 18:08 to go, a Wallette bucket made it 42-30, before a pair of free throws by
Evan Schweitzer cut the gap to 10 50 seconds later. The Gators then pulled to within single digits when back-to-back buckets by Wallette made the score 44-37 with 15:43 left in regulation.
The Bulldogs then went back to the three-pointer to embark on their fateful run, hitting seven treys over the next seven minutes to pull away from the Gators.
Adrian had four players score at least 15 points, led by 20 from Rickey Jackson. Devonte Harris added 19 points and a game-high eight assists, while Anthony Cannon had six rebounds for the Bulldogs, who owned a 33-25 advantage on the glass.
The Gators will return to action on Saturday at 5 p.m., hosting Case Western Reserve on the second and final day of the Greg Richards '08 Memorial Tip-Off Classic.
