Gators Sweep Golden Eagles in Long Island

Allegheny hit .292 for the match and tallied 10 blocks in the victory

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – The Allegheny College volleyball team continued its success in non-conference play this season with a three-set sweep of Saint Joseph's of Long Island this evening.

Allegheny (12-7, 1-3 NCAC) picked up its eighth three-set victory of the season behind an efficient offensive attack, which saw the Gators hit at a .265 clip for the match. The Gators defense at the net stymied Saint Joseph's (9-10, 3-1 Skyline) as the Golden Eagles had 10 attacks blocked and another 19 mishit.

Senior outside hitter Taylor Samuel led Allegheny with 10 kills on a .292 hitting percentage. Sophomore right side Morgan Bush added seven kills while hitting at an impressive .467 clip.

Sophomore setter Justine Kelly quarterbacked the offense, dishing out 23 assists while connecting on six of 11 swings. Kelly added seven digs defensively and served up two aces.

Sophomore libero Terra Schall collected a team-high 17 digs on the evening, while classmate Kylee Karczewski added 13 on the back row. Senior middle hitter Sarah Swartz dominated Saint Joseph's at the net, picking up seven blocks (two solo, five assist).

The Gators hit .371 in the opening frame en route to a 25-18 win. Samuel tallied eight of her 10 kills in the stanza, while fellow senior Julia Weeks added four.

Allegheny took the final two sets by the scores of 25-11 and 25-10. The Gators held the Golden Eagles to a negative .186 hitting percentage in the middle frame and saw sophomore middle hitter Leah Franzluebbers connect on all three of her swings in the closing stanza.

Allegheny completes the quad match in Long Island tomorrow against Misericordia and New Jersey City. The Gators play the respective teams at 10:00 a.m. and noon.
