Allegheny Drops Heartbreaker at Wooster

A two-goal second-half comeback wasn’t enough for Allegheny as a late goal gave Wooster a 3-2 win

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Allegheny College men's soccer team battled back from two goals down in the second half, but a late tally by Wooster was deciding point in the Gators' 3-2 loss to the Fighting Scots this evening in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action.

Allegheny (4-10-2, 3-4-1 NCAC) held edges over Wooster (3-12-2, 1-6-1 NCAC) in shots (18-10) and corner kicks (6-1). Each team was able to generate seven shots on net.

The hosts dented the scoreboard first in the 27th minute when Sheamus Dalton centered a pass to Alex Montalbano, who then flicked it up to Kieffer Hessler near the left post.

Montalbano doubled the Fighting Scot lead in the 35th minute when he held his ground in the box and headed home a corner kick from Lucas Hunt.

It didn't take long in the second half for the Gators to cut into the Wooster lead. Senior midfielder Brenton Stoddart set it up with a pass from the left corner to the far post, where junior midfielder Liam McNamee was there to slot it home in the 50th minute.

Allegheny continued to put pressure on the Fighting Scots, forcing their goalkeeper Scot Stacho into a couple of saves on shots from sophomore forward Bryce Evans and senior midfielder Jacob Lebsack. After Evans' attempt in the 60th minute was turned away, he made sure to capitalize on his next chance as he headed in a poor clear attempt by a Wooster defender to tie the match at 2-2 in the 77th minute.

However, just 43 seconds after Evans found the back of the net, the hosts gained the advantage once again when Alex Hopkins buried a shot from the right wing. His attempt was set up after senior goalkeeper Jake Pugliese made a save on Abdoul-Ahad Sene, but the Gators couldn't clear the ball out of the box.

The visitors put together a dangerous chance with 49 seconds remaining when a cross from the right sideline found the head of junior defender Aaron Donahoe. Donahoe's header had the right height, but it flew just wide of the netting.

Pugliese made four saves in the loss. Lebsack and sophomore forward Tolossa Hassan led Allegheny with three shots each.

Allegheny will recognize the careers of five seniors (Jacob Lebsack, Corey Macmillan, Alex Marks, Jake Pugliese, Brenton Stoddart) prior to its final regular-season match against DePauw at 1:00 p.m. on Halloween.
