MEADVILLE, Pa. - A late run in the first half jumpstarted a dynamic Wooster offense, as the #10 Fighting Scots topped the Gators 104-73 in North Coast Athletic Conference action at the David V. Wise Center.
After Allegheny took a 24-23 lead with just over eight minutes left in the half, the Fighting Scots erupted for a 31-7 run to end the opening frame and never looked back, as they picked up their 11th straight victory, while snapping the Gators' two-game winning streak.
Evan Zabriski led the Gators (8-8, 5-4 NCAC) with 19 points in the losing effort, while
Chris Milon scored 10 and
Andrew Sestina a career-high nine. The Allegheny shooters struggled all night, as the Gators shot just 38 percent from the field, including a 4-for-18 mark from behind the three-point line. Sestina added a season-best six rebounds for Allegheny, but the Gators were out-rebounded 45-30.
While the Gator offense struggled, Wooster (14-2, 8-1 NCAC) put forth an explosive scoring attack, as the Fighting Scots shot 59 percent from the floor, 55 percent (11-for-20) from behind the three-point line, and 89 percent (25-for-28) from the foul line. Wooster's Evan Pannell scored a game-high 23 points, going 8-for-11 from the field, while teammates Dan Fannelly and Spencer Williams each scored 17.
Wooster looked to take charge early, jumping out to a 13-6 lead five minutes into play, but the Gators answered right back. A steal and layup by
Evan Schweitzer, followed by a long three-pointer from Zabriski, cut the deficit to 13-11 with 13:49 remaining, before
Isaiah Henderson picked up a steal and fed Sestina, who threw down a two-handed slam to tie the game at 13 with 13:15 remaining.
The two teams would trade buckets over the next three minutes, before Sestina gave the Gators their first lead of the night, 20-19, on a conventional three-point play at the 10-minute mark. Layups by
Chris Koryak and Milon would allow the Gators to maintain the one-point lead as the game approached the 8-minute mark, before Wooster took command.
Aided by four offensive rebounds, the Fighting Scots scored on five straight possessions to go in front 32-24 with 5:44 left in the half. A layup from Milon and a free throw from Zabriski made the score 37-29 with four minutes left, but Wooster countered with a 17-0 run, highlighted by a trio of three-pointers from Williams, to take a commanding 54-29 lead into the final minute. The Gators five-minute scoreless stretch would finally be snapped with one second left, as Henderson hit a foul line jumper to send the game into the intermission.
The 54-31 halftime deficit proved too much for the Gators to overcome, though they would match the Fighting Scots point-for-point over the majority of the second stanza, as they pulled to within 20 points twice, first on a Zabriski lay up with 8:08 left (79-59), and again on a
Brian Holland bucket that made it 86-66 at the five-minute mark. Wooster would then put a final exlamation point on the victory, out-scoring the Gators 18-7 over the game's final four minutes.
The Gators will look to rebound from the defeat on Sat. Jan. 24, when they travel to Springfield, Ohio to take on NCAC rival Wittenberg in a 3 p.m. tilt. The Gators will be looking for their first-ever season sweep over the Tigers, after earning a 69-56 victory in the season's first game between the two teams on Dec. 6.
