Second Half Surge Lifts Gators Past Jackets

BEXLEY, Ohio - Allegheny opened the Capital University Invitational in fine fashion, posting its second straight shutout victory with a 4-0 blanking of Baldwin Wallace.

A goal from senior Jaymee Wallace in the closing moments of the first half put the Gators up 1-0, before they exploded for three goals in an 11-minute span early in the second half to cruise to victory.  Senior keeper Gabby Curtis earned the shutout win for the second time in as many games, stopping three shots, as the Gators enjoyed a 12-5 advantage in shots for the evening.

Baldwin Wallace opened the game on the offensive, posting the game's first two corner kicks and shots over the opening 19 minutes.  However, Allegheny looked to gain the momentum in the game's 25th minute, as they tallied three shots and a corner kick in a 70-second span.  Baldwin Wallace keeper Emily Tallmadge was up to the task, making a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless.

The Gators continued to control possession, as they held Baldwin Wallace without a shot over the final 26 minutes of the first half.  Allegheny's pressure finally paid off at the 41:18 mark, when Wallace took a pass from Hannah Zangara 15 yards out, and beat Tallmadge for her first goal of the season.

Allegheny finished the first half with a 4-2 advantage in both shots and corner kicks, with Curtis making two saves in the opening stanza.

The Gators got the second half off to a fine start, as just five minutes in, sophomore Jessie Thiessen scored her second goal in as many games with a blast from 10 yards out.  The team kept pressing, with four shots over the next eight minutes, before Lauren Miller took a pass from Wallace from 20 yards out and buried the shot in the upper corner for her first goal of the year to make it 3-0.

Two minutes later, Faith Robinson collected a pass in front from Greta Hilbrands and found the net with her first career goal to give the Gators a commanding 4-0 lead with 28 minutes left in regulation.  Allegheny held the Yellow Jackets at bay for the remainder of the game to cruise to the win and even its record at 2-2.

The Gators controlled play for the duration of the second half, out-shooting the Yellow Jackets 8-3 over the final 45 minutes, with Curtis forced to make just one second-half save.

Allegheny will put its two-game winning streak to the test on Saturday afternoon, closing out the Captial tourney against the host Crusaders, ranked 14th in the preseason National Soccer Coaches Association of America top-25 poll.  Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
